In an effort to establish a peaceful environment in the state, the BJP-led Assam government has taken up steps to bring another militant outfit in the peace process.

A senior official of Assam police’s Special Branch said that Kamtapur Liberation Organization (KLO) – a militant outfit which is active in Assam and some parts of West Bengal, has started talks with some mediators appointed by the Assam government.

“It is completely political and several rounds of talks between the KLO leaders and mediators of the state government were held in the last few months. The KLO leadership also desired to join the mainstream and wanted to take part in the peace process,” the senior official said.

Meanwhile Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the desire of KLO leadership to join mainstream at an early date to resolve all issues through political dialogues.

Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “In Continuation with Govt of India’s efforts to bring lasting peace in the region, I welcome the desire of KLO leadership to join mainstream at an early date to resolve all issues through political dialogues. Govt of Assam would fully reciprocate this goodwill measure.”

On the other hand, the Assam Chief Minister has appealed United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) chief Paresh Baruah to come forward to the negotiating table for the dialogue process.

On Nov 13, 47 militants of Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) led by Mushrang who is the C-in-C of the militant outfit had laid down their arms during an arms laying ceremonial function held at Khepre area, 95-km from Dima Hasao district headquarter Haflong, in presence of Hiren Nath, ADGP (Special Branch) of Assam police and other senior police officials and Debolal Garlosa, Chief Executive Member of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC).

The DNLA militants had deposited a large stash of arms including AK series rifles and ammunition to join mainstream.

Earlier in July this year, 23 militants including three top leaders of National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) had also laid down their arms and took part in the peace process.
