Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking issuance of directions to the State of Tripura to provide security to the party members, especially during the ULB poll campaign. The TMC has also sought formation of an SIT to be headed by a retired judge to investigate the alleged vandalism and hooliganism targeting the TMC members. The petition was filed by advocate Rajat Shegal and it will be heard by the bench of Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Vikram Nath on Wednesday.
TMC in its writ has said that due to unabated assaults the party was finding it difficult to carry on with their campaign.
“Cars and other vehicles of the Petitioners and their supporters are being damaged by the goons and hooligans. As of now, atleast 30 cars have been damaged”, the writ said adding that all were done to thwart the TMC poll campaign. The party has also alleged that the state government has turned blind eye to the violence which is being perpetrated on such a large scale
TMC has also stated that although the party had approached the High Court but since there were Court Holidays the writ was not taken up for hearing and the next date is given as November 11, 2021.
TMC has also sought for issuance of directions to the State to restrain from using their power in an arbitrary and illegal manner so as to allow the petitioners to continue with the campaign in a free and fair manner.
