Tripura Congress has filed nomination papers in 50 of 51 Agartala Municipal Corporation wards ahead of the November 27 elections. TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha highlighted civic issues, including drinking water, property taxes, Smart City projects and urban development.

The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has stepped up its preparations for the upcoming Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections by filing nomination papers in 50 of the 51 municipal wards, signalling an aggressive electoral challenge against the ruling BJP ahead of the November 27 civic polls.

The nomination filing process was completed for 50 wards on Thursday, while the remaining nomination could not be submitted due to certain documentation-related issues. Congress leaders said the necessary formalities would be completed on Friday, expressing confidence that the party would contest all 51 wards.

With candidates entering the electoral field across almost the entire municipal corporation area, the Congress has formally intensified its campaign, seeking to turn the upcoming civic election into a contest centred on urban governance and the performance of the BJP-led municipal administration over the past five years.

Addressing the media ahead of the nomination filing, TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha launched a sharp attack on the ruling BJP, alleging that the municipal administration had failed to address several important civic challenges despite being in power for five years.

Saha questioned the pace and quality of development in Agartala, claiming that the city’s growth had not followed a proper and systematic planning framework. He argued that residents had not witnessed the level of organised urban development expected from the present municipal administration.

The Congress president also raised concerns over projects implemented under the Smart City programme, alleging irregularities in the utilisation of public funds. He demanded greater transparency and accountability in the execution of civic development projects and indicated that these issues would remain central to the party’s election campaign.

Property taxation and drinking water availability were among the major concerns highlighted by the Congress leadership. Saha alleged that increases in property taxes and water charges had placed additional financial pressure on ordinary residents and urban households.

He said the Congress would seek to provide relief to residents from what the party described as an increasing financial burden if it secured control of the municipal corporation. The party also intends to focus on improving basic civic services and ensuring that municipal facilities reach residents more effectively.

Highlighting drinking water as another pressing issue, Saha claimed that people in several parts of Agartala continued to experience difficulties with water availability and access to safe drinking water. He said ensuring a reliable water supply and strengthening essential civic infrastructure would be among the party’s primary priorities.

Employment generation also emerged as an important issue during the Congress campaign launch. The TPCC president criticised the government’s employment record, alleging that promises made to unemployed young people had not translated into the expected job opportunities.

According to Congress leaders, the party plans to build its campaign around what it considers shortcomings in urban governance during the BJP’s tenure. Planned urban development, transparency in Smart City projects, affordable municipal services, environmental management, employment opportunities and improved public infrastructure are expected to feature prominently in its election outreach.

The filing of nominations in 50 wards represents a significant step in the Congress’s preparations for the municipal election. By fielding candidates across nearly the entire corporation area, the party has indicated its intention to challenge the BJP’s position in Agartala’s civic administration.

The November 27 AMC elections are expected to witness an intense political contest as parties seek to convince voters through their respective development agendas and campaign promises. With the Congress raising issues directly connected to everyday urban life, including drinking water, taxation and infrastructure, civic governance is likely to remain a major focus of the election campaign.

The remaining nomination is expected to complete the Congress’s candidate selection and filing process across all 51 wards, setting the stage for a wider electoral battle in Agartala.
