The BJP has announced candidates for 45 of 51 Agartala Municipal Corporation wards ahead of the upcoming civic elections. Sitting Mayor Dipak Majumder will not contest, while the party prioritises young faces, women and grassroots organisational workers.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced candidates for 45 of the 51 wards of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) ahead of the upcoming urban local body elections in Tripura. In a significant political development, sitting Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder has decided not to contest the civic polls, following the party’s organisational policy against appointing sitting legislators to leadership positions in urban local bodies.

The candidate list was announced by BJP state president Abhishek Debroy during a late-night press conference at the party’s state headquarters on Tuesday. The announcement followed an extensive meeting of the party’s core committee at the official residence of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, where senior leaders discussed and finalised the candidates.

Addressing the media, Debroy explained that Majumder’s decision not to contest was in accordance with the BJP’s national-level organisational policy. According to him, the party has decided that sitting MLAs will not be nominated for leadership positions such as chairpersons of Nagar Panchayats, Municipal Councils and Municipal Corporations.

Although Majumder will stay away from the electoral contest, he will continue to play an important role in the BJP’s campaign strategy in Agartala. Debroy confirmed that the sitting mayor would lead the party’s election campaign in the state capital.

He further stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, former Chief Minister and MP Biplab Kumar Deb, and Dipak Majumder would be among the prominent faces of the BJP’s campaign.

The BJP has announced candidates for 45 wards, while the remaining six seats, including Ward 12, are scheduled to be declared on Wednesday. The party will also announce candidates for other municipal bodies and Nagar Panchayats through its official notice boards.

Explaining the candidate selection process, Debroy said the party had given considerable importance to grassroots organisational workers, including Prishtha Pramukhs, booth presidents and Shakti Kendra Pramukhs. He said the BJP wanted to provide opportunities to people from different professional and social backgrounds to participate in electoral politics.

According to the state president, young candidates, particularly women between 20 and 40 years of age, have received opportunities in the candidate list. Doctors, advocates, retired teachers, engineers and individuals from various other professional backgrounds have also been selected.

A preliminary assessment of the announced list indicated that approximately eight to ten new faces had secured nominations. The number could increase after the remaining six candidates are announced.

When asked who would be projected as the next Mayor of Agartala in the absence of Dipak Majumder from the electoral contest, Debroy said the party had not decided on any particular individual before the elections. He clarified that the decision regarding the mayoral leadership would be taken after the election results.

Responding to questions about the exclusion of some candidates who had contested in the previous municipal elections, the BJP state president cited several factors, including changes in reservation arrangements, age-related considerations and internal organisational matters.

He explained that the selection process involved consultations and scrutiny at different organisational levels, including discussions with the party’s central leadership, before the final list was approved.

Debroy also informed that BJP candidates would submit their nomination papers on November 4 and 5 as part of the election process.

Another significant political aspect of the announcement was the party’s proposed electoral understanding with Tipra Motha. Responding to questions about the arrangement, Debroy stated that the BJP had decided to offer three seats to Tipra Motha across Tripura. However, he declined to disclose the specific wards or locations where the seats would be allocated.

The announcement of candidates for 45 AMC wards marks an important step in the BJP’s preparations for the upcoming urban local body elections. With the sitting mayor opting out of the contest and the party introducing new candidates from different professional and social backgrounds, the election is expected to be an important test of the BJP’s organisational strength and political support in Agartala.
