Tripura’s Sangrain Dance Academy showcased the traditional Sangrain and WA dances of the Mog community at Lokrang Mahotsav 2026 in Jaipur on November 2 and 3, highlighting the state’s indigenous cultural heritage, folk traditions and artistic diversity on a national platform.

Tripura’s rich indigenous cultural heritage received national recognition as artists of the Sangrain Dance Academy presented traditional Sangrain Dance and WA Dance performances at the prestigious Lokrang Mahotsav 2026 in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on November 2 and 3. The performances showcased the distinctive folk traditions, artistic expressions and cultural identity of the state’s Mog community before audiences from different parts of the country.

The Tripura-based cultural troupe attracted attention through colourful performances featuring traditional costumes, graceful movements and distinctive choreography rooted in the community’s age-old customs. The presentation offered spectators an opportunity to experience the cultural richness of the Mog community, one of Tripura’s indigenous communities with a unique artistic and traditional heritage.

The contingent was led by Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awardee Raju Mog, who guided the artists in representing Tripura’s cultural diversity at the national-level festival. Under his leadership, members of the academy presented the traditional dance forms with dedication and enthusiasm, highlighting the community’s customs, cultural identity and artistic legacy.

The participation of Sangrain Dance Academy at Lokrang Mahotsav was significant not only as a cultural performance but also as an effort to preserve and promote indigenous folk traditions. The Sangrain and WA dances represent important expressions of the Mog community’s cultural heritage, with traditional movements, costumes and artistic elements reflecting customs passed down through generations.

At a time when several indigenous performing art forms are facing challenges in maintaining their popularity among younger generations, participation in national cultural festivals provides an important opportunity to promote traditional knowledge and encourage cultural continuity.

The performances in Jaipur also helped introduce the lesser-known cultural traditions of Tripura to a wider national audience. Through their artistic presentation, the performers highlighted the state’s diverse ethnic and cultural landscape, demonstrating how traditional art forms continue to contribute to India’s broader cultural identity.

Cultural enthusiasts view such platforms as important opportunities for folk artists to gain recognition beyond their home states. Participation in festivals like Lokrang Mahotsav allows traditional performers to interact with artists from different regions, exchange cultural experiences and create greater awareness about their respective communities.

For the Mog community of Tripura, the presentation also served as a celebration of cultural identity and collective heritage. The academy’s efforts reflected years of dedication, regular practice and commitment towards safeguarding traditional performing arts.

The leadership of Raju Mog, a recipient of the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, further highlighted the contribution of experienced folk artists in promoting indigenous traditions and inspiring younger performers to remain connected with their cultural roots.

Tripura is home to several indigenous communities with distinct languages, customs, festivals, music and dance traditions. The participation of the Sangrain Dance Academy at a national cultural event brought attention to this diversity and reinforced the importance of providing greater platforms for regional and indigenous artists.

Through their performances in Jaipur, the artists carried the cultural identity of the Mog community beyond state boundaries, contributing to the preservation, recognition and promotion of Tripura’s indigenous artistic heritage.

Such cultural exchanges are expected to encourage younger generations to appreciate their traditional roots while helping India’s diverse folk traditions receive wider recognition.
