Tripura CM Manik Saha laid foundation stones for three healthcare projects worth Rs. 189 crore in Gomati district, including expansions of Tripura Sundari Sub-Divisional Hospital and Gomati District Hospital, alongside a new Block Public Health Unit.

Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha laid the foundation stones for three major healthcare infrastructure projects worth a combined Rs. 189 crore in Gomati district on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards expanding medical facilities and improving healthcare services for residents of the region.

The projects include the expansion of Tripura Sundari Sub-Divisional Hospital in Udaipur, the expansion of Gomati District Hospital and the establishment of a Block Public Health Unit. The foundation-laying ceremony was held in Udaipur, a prominent religious and cultural centre in Tripura, with Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy also participating in the programme.

Addressing the gathering, Saha described the occasion as an important day for healthcare in Gomati district. He said the state government was continuing to invest in medical infrastructure to ensure that people could access better treatment and essential healthcare services closer to their homes.

According to the details shared at the programme, the expansion of Tripura Sundari Sub-Divisional Hospital has an estimated cost of Rs. 46.40 crore. The expansion of Gomati District Hospital is expected to cost Rs. 142 crore, while the Block Public Health Unit project has an estimated cost of Rs. 60 lakh.

Before the formal foundation-stone ceremony, the Chief Minister and Finance Minister performed the bhumi pujan for the expansion of Tripura Sundari Sub-Divisional Hospital.

Saha said the projects formed part of the government’s wider efforts to strengthen healthcare facilities across Tripura and improve access to medical treatment for the public.

Highlighting progress in medical education, the Chief Minister said the state had increased seats in MBBS, Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and nursing courses. Hospital bed capacity had also expanded at district hospitals and Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC).

He added that the government aimed to develop AGMC and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital into institutions ranked among the ten leading hospitals in the country. According to the ranking information cited by the Chief Minister, AGMC currently stands at 131st among government medical colleges nationwide.

The government is also working to strengthen specialised healthcare services. Saha said construction had begun on a modern eye hospital beside ILS Hospital in Agartala, which is intended to provide advanced eye treatment within the state.

The Chief Minister highlighted the role of public healthcare schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Chief Minister’s Niramay Arogya Yojana, in supporting free treatment and diagnostic services for eligible beneficiaries.

He further claimed that referrals of patients to hospitals outside Tripura had declined by approximately 80 per cent, which he attributed to improvements in the state’s healthcare infrastructure and treatment facilities.

Saha also referred to the scale of ongoing development activities in Tripura. He said projects worth around Rs. 1,500 crore had been inaugurated or had their foundation stones laid during the previous financial year. In the current financial year, projects valued at approximately Rs. 1,300 crore had been inaugurated or launched up to the time of his remarks.

Turning to Udaipur’s broader development, the Chief Minister said the city was gaining importance through improved civic facilities, tourism infrastructure and people-oriented projects. He noted that the government was developing satellite townships in Agartala, Dharmanagar and Udaipur.

The beautification of Tripura Sundari Temple under the PRASAD scheme has further strengthened Udaipur’s appeal as a religious tourism destination. Saha said the project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, had helped attract visitors from different parts of the country.

He also highlighted the construction of a replica of the 51 Shakti Peethas in Udaipur and the functioning of an Ayurvedic college at Tepania. Beautification and infrastructure development initiatives are also continuing across the city.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that improved civic services, expanding tourism facilities and public infrastructure projects would help Udaipur emerge as one of Tripura’s leading urban centres after Agartala.

Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said the new healthcare projects would help improve treatment facilities and benefit patients across the district. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services.

The three projects are expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Gomati district and support the state’s broader objective of providing more accessible and modern medical services to the people of Tripura.
