Women-led farmer producer organisations are emerging as key drivers of inclusive agricultural growth in India, with nearly 80 per cent of women-led Farmer Producer Companies having more than 600 members. The findings were highlighted in the sixth edition of the State of the FPO Sector 2026 report, launched by the National Association for Farmer Producer Organisations in partnership with NABARD. The report noted that India’s FPO sector has crossed 49,800 registered entities.

The report said women-led FPOs have shown stronger survival and resilience after incorporation. They have also recorded improvements in income and market access in several cases. However, low land ownership among women, estimated at around 13 to 14 per cent, and limited access to capital continue to restrict their growth and access to formal finance.

To address these challenges, the report recommended formalising the transition from self-help groups to Farmer Producer Companies and ensuring greater participation of women in governance and financial decision-making. NAFPO Steering Committee Chairperson Pravesh Sharma said women should move beyond being beneficiaries of the FPO movement and become its owners, decision-makers and entrepreneurs.
