Meghalaya government intensifies preparations for the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival on November 20 and 21, focusing on infrastructure, traffic management, visitor movement and security at New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mawkhanu ahead of the major tourism and cultural event.

The Meghalaya government has stepped up preparations for the upcoming Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, with the East Khasi Hills district administration reviewing infrastructure, security and crowd-management arrangements ahead of the two-day event scheduled for November 20 and 21.

The festival will be held at the New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mawkhanu, New Shillong, where popular artistes from outside Meghalaya are expected to perform. With the event likely to attract visitors from different parts of the state and beyond, the administration has begun assessing arrangements to ensure the festival is conducted smoothly and in an organised manner.

As part of the preparations, officials from the East Khasi Hills district administration inspected the festival venue to assess the facilities and infrastructure required for the event. Traffic management, visitor movement and essential public amenities were identified as key areas requiring attention ahead of the festival.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said the district administration was working on the necessary arrangements and would ensure adequate security measures for visitors. The administration is also focusing on facilitating the movement of people and maintaining proper crowd management throughout the event.

The preparations come as Meghalaya gets ready to host one of its major tourism and cultural attractions. The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival has gained prominence over the years for bringing together the natural beauty of the region with music, food, art and entertainment.

Launched in 2016, the festival is associated with the seasonal flowering of Himalayan cherry blossom trees across Shillong and surrounding areas. The trees bloom during the autumn months, covering parts of the city and its surroundings with distinctive pink blossoms.

Shillong’s cherry blossom season differs from Japan’s widely recognised spring cherry blossom period. The autumn flowering in Meghalaya provides a unique seasonal attraction and has become an important part of the state’s tourism identity.

The festival was established with the broader objective of promoting Meghalaya as a tourism destination while showcasing its natural landscape, cultural traditions and creative industries. Over the years, the event has provided a platform for local performers as well as national and international artistes.

Alongside musical performances, the festival has featured food and culinary showcases, art-related activities and other cultural programmes. The combination of Meghalaya’s seasonal landscape and contemporary entertainment has helped the festival become a notable event on the state’s annual tourism calendar.

The New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mawkhanu will serve as the venue for this year’s two-day programme. With performances by artistes from outside the state expected to be among the attractions, the administration is preparing for the movement of a large number of visitors to and from the venue.

Traffic regulation is therefore among the key priorities identified during the venue inspection. Proper planning for vehicle movement, pedestrian access and visitor circulation is expected to play an important role in reducing congestion and maintaining orderly movement during the festival.

Security arrangements are another major focus of the preparations. According to the district administration, adequate measures will be put in place to safeguard visitors and support the smooth conduct of festival activities. Public amenities and other essential facilities at the venue are also being reviewed as part of the preparations.

The district administration and other agencies involved in organising the event are expected to continue preparations as the November 20 and 21 dates approach. Coordination between the concerned authorities will be important for managing traffic, security, public movement and other logistical requirements during the festival.
