Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is executing over 1,800 km of new line and doubling projects worth Rs 96,000 crore, with 596 km completed and major connectivity projects across the Northeast progressing through advanced technology, engineering and resilient construction methods.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Construction wing is currently executing more than 1,800 km of new railway lines and doubling projects across the Northeast, with a combined estimated cost of over Rs 96,000 crore, officials said on Wednesday.
The ongoing projects include several major connectivity initiatives aimed at strengthening the railway network across the region and improving access to important cities and strategically significant areas. According to NFR General Manager (Construction) Ashish Bansal, around 596 km of the projects have already been completed, while a substantial programme of commissioning is planned during the next five years.
Bansal highlighted the progress and future plans while speaking at the INFRABUILD Northeast 2026 Conference on Construction for Infrastructure, held in Guwahati. The conference focused on infrastructure construction in the Northeast, with discussions covering major project achievements, emerging opportunities, engineering challenges and the growing role of technology in safe, resilient and sustainable construction.
According to Bansal, railway construction in the Northeast involves several complex engineering challenges because of the region’s difficult terrain, heavy rainfall, geological uncertainties, landslides, environmental concerns, land-related issues and limited accessibility. These conditions require specialised engineering solutions and advanced construction techniques, along with continuous attention to safety, quality and long-term resilience.
Highlighting some of the major achievements of NFR Construction, Bansal said the 51-km Bairabi-Sairang New Line has been completed. The project provides railway connectivity to Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, through challenging hill terrain. The construction involved extensive tunnelling and bridge works because of the region’s difficult topography.
He also highlighted the completion of the 111-km Araria-Galgalia New Line, which was fully commissioned on July 11, 2025. The project is among the important railway infrastructure developments being undertaken to strengthen connectivity in the region.
Progress has also been recorded on the Dimapur-Kohima New Line in Nagaland. The Dhansiri-Shokhuvi and Shokhuvi-Molvom sections have already been commissioned. The 14-km Molvom-Pherima section has been targeted for commissioning by March 2027, marking another significant step towards improving rail connectivity to Kohima.
The strategically important Jiribam-Imphal New Line, covering approximately 111 km, has also witnessed phased commissioning. More than 55 km of the project has already been commissioned, while the next 9.10-km Khongsang-Awangkhul section is targeted for commissioning in October 2026.
NFR Construction has also made progress on railway doubling projects. The 11-km Katihar-Kuretha and 17-km Katihar-Sonaili sections were commissioned on June 19, 2026. These projects are part of efforts to enhance railway capacity and improve operational efficiency across important routes.
Beyond the projects currently under execution, NFR Construction has a substantial pipeline of future railway infrastructure works. Bansal said that 69 surveys are currently at various stages of progress, along with ongoing Final Location Surveys. These surveys are expected to support the planning and development of future railway projects in the Northeast.
Technology-driven construction has emerged as another major focus area for NFR. Bansal highlighted the use of New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM)-based tunnelling, geological mapping and instrumentation in challenging construction environments. Mechanised construction methods are also being adopted to improve efficiency and safety.
The railway construction organisation is additionally using modern technologies such as drones, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Geographic Information System (GIS), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and digital project monitoring. These technologies are helping in surveying, planning, monitoring and managing complex infrastructure projects across difficult terrain.
Bansal further stressed the importance of designing future railway infrastructure to withstand extreme weather conditions while reducing environmental impact. Given the Northeast’s vulnerability to heavy rainfall, landslides and other natural challenges, resilience and sustainability remain important considerations in railway construction.
He said the experience accumulated by NFR Construction while implementing projects across difficult terrain has created valuable institutional knowledge and encouraged the development of innovative engineering practices.

The focus, according to the senior railway official, remains on developing infrastructure that is safe, durable, technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable, while ensuring delivery within committed time and cost parameters. The ongoing projects are expected to play a significant role in strengthening railway connectivity and supporting the broader development of the Northeast.
