A youth has died following an alleged assault at Swapna Foundation Rehab Centre, leading to the arrest of eight people, including the centre owner. Police have registered a case under BNS sections and are seeking custody for further investigation.
Police have arrested eight people, including the owner of Swapna Foundation Rehab Centre, in connection with the alleged assault and death of a youth at the private de-addiction centre. The arrests were made after a complaint from the deceased’s wife, who alleged that her husband was assaulted while undergoing treatment at the rehabilitation facility.
The arrested persons include centre owner Shubham Biswas, office staff and individuals staying at the rehabilitation centre, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered at NCC police station under Sections 118(1) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
NCC police station officer-in-charge Paritosh Das said Shahana Das Bhattacharya lodged a complaint at the police station on August 16. According to the complaint, her husband, Tuhinsubhra Bhattacharya, was allegedly assaulted at Swapna Foundation Rehab Centre on August 9.
Following the alleged assault, Tuhinsubhra was taken to GBP Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, police said.
The complainant also alleged that the family had made several payments to the rehabilitation centre for the youth’s treatment, medicines and consultations with doctors. She further alleged that additional payments were demanded at later stages.
Based on the complaint, police registered case number 59/2024 at NCC police station and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the youth’s death.
Police said the preliminary investigation has indicated the involvement of eight people in the alleged incident. Following the collection of initial evidence, all eight suspects were arrested.
According to police, preliminary examination of the deceased’s body also revealed marks allegedly indicating assault. These findings were reportedly mentioned in the relevant medical report and have become part of the ongoing investigation.
Officer-in-charge Paritosh Das said there had been no previous complaint of a similar nature against the rehabilitation centre before the present case. However, police claimed that the investigation into the current complaint had produced sufficient preliminary evidence against the arrested persons.

Police are also investigating the financial transactions between the family and the rehabilitation centre. Officials said the family had initially paid Rs 5,000 when the deceased was admitted to the facility. The collection of additional money at different stages is also being examined as part of the investigation.
The eight arrested persons are expected to be produced before a court. Police will seek their remand to conduct further investigation into the alleged assault, the circumstances leading to the youth’s death and the role of each arrested person.
