Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the grenade attack on Congress leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh’s residence in Thoubal, ordering a thorough investigation. He said violence against elected representatives is unacceptable and warned that those responsible will face justice.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Friday strongly condemned the grenade attack on the residence of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and Wangkhem MLA Keisham Meghachandra Singh in Thoubal district, describing violence against elected representatives as unacceptable in a democracy.
The blast occurred near the gate of Meghachandra Singh’s residence at Yairipok Bishnu Naha in Wangkhem constituency on Thursday evening. According to the initial information, the explosion is suspected to have been caused by an explosive thrown by an unidentified person. The identity of the perpetrator and the motive behind the attack have not yet been established.
Following the incident, police personnel visited the site and conducted a search operation as part of the investigation. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the incident in a post on X on Friday. He said the attack on the residence of the Congress Legislature Party leader and Wangkhem Assembly Constituency MLA was deeply concerning and directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
“Such acts of violence against elected representatives are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the Chief Minister said, stressing that the government would take the matter seriously.
Khemchand Singh further directed the police to ensure that the perpetrators were identified and brought to justice at the earliest. His remarks came amid concerns over attacks targeting residences of elected representatives in the state.
The grenade attack also triggered a public protest in Yairipok on Friday. The All Yairipok Apunba Ima Lup (AYAIL) organised a sit-in demonstration to condemn the use of explosives in a residential area. Protesters expressed concern over public safety and opposed acts of violence that could endanger residents.
The latest incident comes days after another attack at the residence of former minister and sitting BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh at Konthoujam Mayai Leikai in Imphal West district.
On August 28, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh visited Sapam Ranjan Singh’s residence following a bomb blast at the premises. The Chief Minister had also strongly condemned that incident, calling it a “senseless and barbaric attack” on the residence of a people’s representative.
According to Sapam Ranjan Singh, the incident occurred while he was present at his residence. The bomb exploded in the backyard of the house, leaving a small crater on the ground and causing minor damage to the compound walls.
Police registered a case following the blast at the BJP MLA’s residence and initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

The two incidents involving residences of elected representatives have raised concerns over security and public safety in Manipur. The Chief Minister’s repeated condemnation of such attacks reflects the government’s stated position that violence against elected representatives cannot be accepted in a democratic system.
The investigation into the latest grenade attack on Meghachandra Singh’s residence remains underway, with police expected to establish the identity of the attacker and the motive behind the incident.
