Tripura State Election Commission announces Village Committee (VC) polls for September 28, 2026, with counting scheduled for October 5. Nearly 9.62 lakh voters are eligible, while security preparations and political mobilisation intensify ahead of the TTAADC elections.
The State Election Commission of Tripura has announced the schedule for the much-awaited General Elections to the Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), with polling scheduled for September 28, 2026, and counting of votes on October 5.
According to State Election Commissioner Dr. P. K. Chakraborty, the official election notification will mark the beginning of the formal electoral process. The last date for filing nomination papers has been fixed for September 8, with candidates allowed to submit their papers between 11 am and 3 pm.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on September 9, while candidates wishing to withdraw from the contest can do so until 3 pm on September 11.
Polling for the Village Committee elections will be conducted on September 28 from 7 am to 4 pm. If re-polling becomes necessary at any polling station, it will be held on October 3. The counting of votes will take place on October 5, after which the winning candidates and election results will be formally declared.
The State Election Commission said adequate security arrangements and preventive measures would be put in place well ahead of polling to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election. The Commission has already held discussions with the Police Administration and reviewed law-and-order conditions as well as security requirements for the elections.
Chakraborty said the election schedule was finalised after considering several factors, including board examinations, major festivals and the prevailing law-and-order situation.
According to the final voter list published on June 15, a total of 9,61,978 voters are eligible to participate in the Village Committee elections across the state. The electorate includes 4,79,930 female voters, 4,82,041 male voters and six third-gender voters.
The announcement has also triggered political mobilisation in Tripura. Tipra Motha Party founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma described the upcoming Village Committee elections as a crucial political contest and said the outcome could send an important signal ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Addressing supporters through Facebook Live on August 31, Pradyot urged party leaders and workers to begin preparations and select honest, capable and committed candidates. He said the party would start its election process from September 1.
Pradyot described the election announcement as a major development following a prolonged legal and political struggle. He claimed the polls would restore an opportunity for indigenous people in villages to exercise their voting and constitutional rights after nearly a decade.
He also stressed the importance of elected representatives in ensuring that development funds reach villages, rather than remaining under the influence of individual political leaders.
Pradyot urged party leaders not to distribute tickets based on personal connections, family relationships or political influence. Instead, he called for candidates who can bring genuine development and meaningful change to rural communities.
He further alleged that Congress and CPI(M) had failed to raise the issue strongly enough, while accusing the BJP of remaining silent.

With nominations, scrutiny, withdrawals, polling and counting dates now fixed, political parties and prospective candidates are expected to intensify their preparations. The Village Committee elections are likely to remain an important political focus in Tripura in the weeks ahead.
