Tripura Assembly witnessed high drama as Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was expelled for allegedly using unparliamentary language against Speaker Rampada Jamatia while seeking discussion on the alleged suicide note linked to former DGP Anurag’s death.
High drama unfolded in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Monday as Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was expelled from the House for the day following an alleged use of unparliamentary language against Speaker Rampada Jamatia.
The incident occurred during Zero Hour on the third day of the 13th Tripura Assembly’s 10th session. Barman sought to raise the controversial issue surrounding an alleged suicide note linked to the death of Tripura DGP Anurag. However, the Speaker had earlier disallowed discussion on the matter.
Despite the ruling, Barman continued to protest and attempted to press for a discussion. The exchange between the Congress MLA and the Speaker subsequently became heated, with Jamatia objecting to Barman’s remarks and accusing him of using objectionable language.
The Speaker then ordered Barman’s expulsion from the Assembly for the day, citing disruption of proceedings and the alleged use of unparliamentary words.
Following the ruling, Congress and CPI(M) legislators, led by Barman, entered the well of the House and staged a protest. Opposition MLAs continued to demand that the issue concerning the alleged DGP suicide note be allowed for discussion, leading to further disruption of Assembly proceedings.
The confrontation triggered sharp exchanges between the ruling and opposition benches. The opposition maintained that the alleged suicide note and circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death were matters of significant public interest and should be discussed in the Assembly.
The ruling side, however, maintained that parliamentary discipline and established procedures must be respected during legislative proceedings. The Speaker defended his decision, stressing the need to maintain order and decorum inside the House.
The episode added to the political tension during the ongoing Assembly session, with the opposition accusing the government of preventing discussion on an important issue, while the treasury benches emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and parliamentary propriety.
