Minister Kishor Barman has sought Central assistance to develop Rudrasagar Lake into an iconic national destination. Proposals include lake restoration, increased water depth, modernised water management and improved connectivity to boost tourism and local employment.
Tripura Higher Education Minister and Nalchar MLA Kishor Barman has sought support from the Union Government for the comprehensive restoration and development of Rudrasagar Lake, with the objective of transforming the historically significant waterbody into one of India’s iconic lakes.
Barman raised the issue during a meeting with Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary at the latter’s official residence. During the meeting, the Tripura minister discussed several proposals concerning the conservation, restoration and improvement of Rudrasagar and its associated water management infrastructure.
In a social media statement, Barman said he had highlighted the need for comprehensive renovation of Rudrasagar, increasing the depth of the lake, modernising the water flow management system of Noachhara and renovating the confluence of Kanchigang and the Gomati River.
As the MLA representing Nalchar, Barman emphasised the importance of securing necessary Central assistance and support for implementing these proposed development initiatives. He requested the Union Minister to consider appropriate measures to develop Rudrasagar into an iconic lake with national recognition.
The proposed development plan focuses not only on restoring the lake but also on improving the surrounding water management systems to ensure its long-term sustainability. Increasing the water depth is among the key priorities, as it is expected to contribute to better water retention and the overall restoration of the waterbody.
Barman stressed that the development of Rudrasagar should be undertaken through a planned approach that preserves its natural beauty, historical heritage and ecological significance. He said the lake has considerable potential to emerge as a major tourism destination in Tripura if appropriate conservation and infrastructure development measures are implemented.

According to the minister, transforming Rudrasagar into a nationally recognised tourist attraction could generate wider economic benefits for surrounding communities. Increased tourist arrivals could create new employment opportunities, support local businesses and provide additional income opportunities for people living in the surrounding areas.
He also highlighted the importance of protecting the lake’s environmental value while undertaking modernisation and restoration activities. The objective, he said, should be to balance tourism development with ecological conservation so that the natural character of Rudrasagar remains protected for future generations.
Barman stated that Union Minister Raj Bhushan Choudhary gave serious consideration to the issues raised during their discussion and assured him that necessary steps would be taken at the earliest.
The assurance has raised expectations regarding possible Central support for the proposed restoration and water management initiatives. However, the specific funding arrangements, project timelines and implementation details have not yet been announced.
The Higher Education Minister expressed confidence that coordinated efforts between the state and Central governments could help establish Rudrasagar as a prominent national heritage and tourism destination.
He further stated that the vision was not limited to conserving the lake in its present condition but also involved giving it a renewed identity through planned development, environmental protection and improved infrastructure.

The proposed initiatives, including lake deepening, modernisation of Noachhara’s water flow system and restoration of the Kanchigang-Gomati confluence, are expected to form important components of the broader development vision.
Barman reiterated that developing Rudrasagar as an iconic lake would not only strengthen Tripura’s tourism potential but also contribute to local economic growth, employment generation and environmental preservation.
The initiative reflects an effort to give greater national recognition to Tripura’s natural and historical assets while ensuring that their ecological and cultural importance is preserved for coming generations.
