Kareena Kapoor Khan explains how her ‘Daayra’ character differs from Rosie in ‘Talaash’, highlighting a feminine yet strong female cop role in Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming crime thriller starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, set to release on September 18, 2026.
Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan has opened up about the key differences between her characters in Talaash: The Answer Lies Within and her upcoming crime thriller Daayra. The actress said that while her role as Rosie in Talaash had a more seductive quality, her character in Daayra represents a completely different side of her acting range.
Kareena was speaking to the media at the trailer launch of Daayra in the city on Monday. During the interaction, she discussed how director Meghna Gulzar created a distinct world for her character in the upcoming film.
According to Kareena, Rosie, her character in Talaash, was written as a more seductive personality. In contrast, her role in Daayra is that of a female police officer who is strong and capable while still retaining her feminine identity.
“I think Rosie was a very different kind of a character. She was more seductive and this is a completely different world that Meghna put me in. We’ve tried to keep the essence of just the fact that she’s not a typical kind of tough nut cop,” Kareena said.
The actress also stressed that being a police officer does not necessarily mean a woman has to abandon her femininity or change the way she presents herself. She explained that the makers deliberately allowed her character to maintain a feminine energy while portraying the professional strength required of a cop.
“She’s a pretty cop also. Yeah, I mean women like wearing lipstick. It doesn’t have to be that if you’re a cop you have to be a particular way,” Kareena said.
She added that the character’s appearance and personality were designed to underline the idea that women can remain true to themselves while working in demanding professions.
“We’ve kept her feminine slightly because as women, we have to own who we are and we’re proud to be who we are also. So when you’re a cop and you want to be wearing trousers and you’re wearing something, it doesn’t mean that you have to become that,” the actress explained.
Kareena’s comments indicate that Daayra will present her in a role that combines professional determination with a more nuanced portrayal of femininity. Rather than relying solely on the conventional image of a physically tough police officer, the character appears to have been developed with greater attention to personality and individuality.
Daayra is a crime thriller co-written and directed by filmmaker Meghna Gulzar. The film is produced by Vineet Jain under the banner of Junglee Pictures and features Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran in a lead role alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan.
The film is expected to explore a crime-driven narrative while bringing together two prominent performers from different film industries. With Meghna Gulzar at the helm, the project has also generated interest for its subject, cast and distinctive approach to its central characters.

For Kareena, Daayra marks another opportunity to explore a character that differs significantly from some of her earlier performances. Her comparison with Rosie from Talaash also highlights the contrast between the two roles and the way she has approached the new character.
Daayra is scheduled to arrive in theatres on September 18, 2026.
