Fields across Kalyanpur are currently covered with lush green vines growing on bamboo trellises, with the plants carrying glossy, dark-green bitter gourds. Farmers said the Dhruva 81 variety has performed well under local cultivation conditions and has attracted buyers because of its size, colour and overall structure.
At present, wholesale prices for bitter gourd are hovering around Rs 80 per kg, while retail prices are reaching nearly Rs 100 per kg. The combination of good production and favourable prices has encouraged farmers to invest greater effort in cultivation and harvesting.

Another farmer, Sukumar Pal, said bitter gourd cultivation requires considerable labour and regular attention, but the returns currently justify the effort. Encouraged by the results, he said he plans to expand cultivation in the next season with more systematic planning and improved farm management.
Several other farmers in Kalyanpur have also expressed satisfaction with the crop’s performance. They pointed out that vegetable prices can fluctuate considerably, but the present demand for bitter gourd has strengthened their confidence. Early every morning, farmers are harvesting mature gourds and transporting the produce to nearby markets in an effort to benefit from the prevailing prices.
The cultivation has also created a visible change in the agricultural landscape of the area. Rows of bamboo-supported vines loaded with bitter gourds have become a common sight, reflecting the growing interest in the variety among local farmers.
Agricultural experts have suggested that continued access to quality seeds, modern cultivation techniques, timely technical guidance and improved marketing facilities could help expand bitter gourd cultivation in Kalyanpur. Such expansion could potentially increase farmers’ earnings while also contributing to a more consistent supply of vegetables in local markets.
