US President Donald Trump has announced that tariffs on Canadian vehicles, automotive parts and steel will increase to 50 per cent from January 1, 2027, marking a significant escalation in the trade confrontation between the United States and Canada.
Trump made the announcement in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he accused Canada of imposing excessively high tariffs on American agricultural products and maintaining what he described as an unfair trade relationship with the United States.
“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” Trump said, while criticising Ottawa’s trade policies toward American farmers and agricultural producers.
According to Trump, Canada’s tariffs on US farm and agricultural products have contributed to a substantial trade deficit between the two neighbouring countries. He claimed that the existing arrangement had created a $60 billion deficit for the United States and argued that the situation was no longer sustainable.
“On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50 per cent,” Trump said in his announcement.
The proposed tariff increase would affect several major sectors of cross-border trade. The automotive industry is particularly significant because the United States and Canada have deeply integrated manufacturing and supply chains, with vehicles and automotive components frequently crossing the border during production.
Trump also offered an incentive for companies to shift their manufacturing operations to the United States. He said businesses that manufacture their products domestically would not face the new tariffs.
“Build in the US, and there are zero tariffs,” Trump said, signalling that the administration intends to use trade policy to encourage greater domestic manufacturing and investment.
The US President also adopted a tougher tone toward Canada’s broader relationship with Washington. He said Canada would no longer receive what he described as preferential treatment from the United States and argued that Ottawa had benefited disproportionately from the existing trade relationship.
“Canada will be treated like a State no longer!” Trump said, while further criticising the country’s approach to trade and economic relations with the United States.
Trump also argued that Canada is heavily dependent on the American market. He claimed that approximately 95 per cent of Canada’s business is conducted with the United States, contrasting this with what he described as a much lower level of American dependence on Canadian trade.
The announcement comes amid continuing trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. The two countries maintain one of the world’s largest bilateral trading relationships, with businesses and consumers on both sides of the border closely connected through manufacturing, agriculture, energy and other industries.

The proposed 50 per cent tariffs, if implemented as announced, could significantly increase costs for companies importing Canadian vehicles, automotive components and steel into the United States.
