Nationwide tributes marked Rajiv Gandhi’s 82nd birth anniversary, with Congress observing Sadbhavana Diwas in Tripura. Leaders remembered his contributions to national unity, technological progress, Panchayati Raj, rural empowerment and India’s modernization, while calling for democratic values, social harmony and inclusive development.
The 82nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi was observed across India and in Tripura on Thursday with solemn ceremonies, floral tributes and political programmes highlighting his contributions to national unity, technological advancement and grassroots democracy.
In Tripura, the Pradesh Congress Committee organized a series of commemorative programmes in Agartala to remember the former Prime Minister and his political legacy. The observances began with the hoisting of the Congress flag at the Congress Bhavan, followed by floral tributes at the statue of Rajiv Gandhi.
Congress leaders and workers later gathered at the Shaheed Bedi at Gandhi Ghat, where they paid homage to the former Prime Minister. The programmes were also held as part of Sadbhavana Diwas, observed to promote the ideals of peace, communal harmony, national integration and social unity associated with Rajiv Gandhi’s vision.
Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha, MLA Sudip Roy Barman, senior party leader Gopal Chandra Roy and several other state-level Congress leaders attended the programmes.
Addressing the gathering, Ashish Kumar Saha recalled Rajiv Gandhi’s role in India’s modernization and described his contributions to the country as significant and enduring. He highlighted the former Prime Minister’s efforts to bring science and technology into governance and to strengthen local democracy through the Panchayati Raj system.
Saha also recalled Rajiv Gandhi’s youthful leadership, noting that he became India’s youngest Prime Minister and inspired a generation with his emphasis on development, technology and a modern outlook.
“Rajiv Gandhi’s ideals of peace, unity and development continue to guide us. On his birth anniversary, we pledge to follow the path he showed,” Saha said.
Congress leaders also highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s initiatives in areas including education, communication, technological development and rural governance. According to the party, his emphasis on strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions contributed to efforts to empower local communities and increase grassroots participation in governance.
The birth anniversary programmes also provided an occasion for the Tripura Congress leadership to comment on the current political situation. Party leaders alleged that democratic values and institutions are facing challenges and contrasted what they described as Rajiv Gandhi’s vision of inclusive development with contemporary political developments.
They emphasized that the former Prime Minister’s legacy should not be limited to commemorative events but should also be reflected in efforts to strengthen national integration, social harmony, democratic values and technological progress.
Similar programmes were organized at district and block-level Congress offices across Tripura. Party workers and leaders participated in tribute ceremonies and discussions aimed at recalling Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions to the country.
The observances concluded with Congress leaders and workers reaffirming their commitment to carrying forward Rajiv Gandhi’s ideals. They stressed the importance of maintaining unity, promoting social harmony and encouraging technological and economic development while strengthening grassroots democracy.
