Tripura will celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day on August 15 with state-wide programmes, tight security, flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural events and public activities. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will lead the main celebration at Assam Rifles Ground in Agartala, while police and border forces maintain heightened vigilance.
Tripura is set to celebrate the country’s 80th Independence Day on August 15 with a series of programmes across the state, as the administration steps up preparations for the national occasion and security agencies strengthen vigilance to ensure peaceful celebrations.
The main Independence Day function in Agartala will be held at the Assam Rifles Ground, where Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will hoist the National Flag and receive the ceremonial salute at 9:10 am. He will subsequently inspect the parade and present various awards and medals as part of the state-level celebrations.
Security arrangements have been strengthened across the state ahead of Independence Day. Police authorities are planning tight security measures to prevent any untoward incident during the celebrations. Security forces are also maintaining heightened vigilance along the India-Bangladesh international border, keeping a close watch on developments during the period.
The celebrations in Agartala will begin on August 14 with a cleanliness drive across important locations in the city. The campaign will cover the Assam Rifles Ground, Gandhi Ghat, Shahid Minar, government offices, educational institutions and other key public places. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that important venues remain clean and properly prepared for the Independence Day programmes.
An open cross-country competition will also be organised on August 14. The event will begin at 6 am from the premises of Umakanta Academy. Participants will compete in separate races, with a 3-kilometre event for women and a 5-kilometre race for men.
The main day of celebration will begin early on August 15 with a Prabhat Pheri at 5 am. Students from various schools are expected to participate in the procession, which will pass through major roads of Agartala. Following sunrise, people will also hoist the National Flag at their private residences as part of the Independence Day observance.
At 7 am, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath will hoist the National Flag at the Secretariat premises. Similar flag-hoisting ceremonies will be organised at government offices and educational institutions across Agartala and other parts of the state.
Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu will participate in a series of programmes paying tribute to the nation’s freedom fighters and Mahatma Gandhi. At 8 am, the Governor will offer floral tribute at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near Circuit House. Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath will remain present during the programme.
The Governor will then proceed to Gandhi Ghat, where he will pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the Gandhi Bedi at 8:15 am. The tribute programmes will continue at Shahid Minar at Albert Ekka Park in Lichubagan at 8:35 am, where the Governor will pay respect to the martyrs. The Agriculture Minister will also be present at the programme.
The central Independence Day function at Assam Rifles Ground will commence at 9:10 am. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will hoist the National Flag before receiving the ceremonial salute. He will then inspect the parade and confer various awards and medals.
At 9:50 am, the Chief Minister will address the people of Tripura. His address is expected to form an important part of the state-level Independence Day programme, alongside the ceremonial parade and other official activities.
The celebrations will continue into the evening with cultural programmes. A special cultural programme featuring prominent artists from Tripura will be organised at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Town Hall at 5 pm on August 15. The event is expected to showcase the cultural richness and artistic talent of the state.
The day’s programmes will conclude with another event at Lok Bhavan at 6 pm. With activities ranging from cleanliness drives and sporting events to flag-hoisting ceremonies, tributes, parades and cultural programmes, Tripura is preparing to mark the 80th Independence Day with patriotic enthusiasm across the state.

Authorities are also focusing on maintaining law and order and ensuring smooth movement of people during the various programmes. Security personnel will remain deployed at key locations and along sensitive areas to facilitate peaceful observance of Independence Day.
The celebrations are expected to bring together students, government officials, security personnel, artists and citizens across Tripura to commemorate the nation’s Independence Day and honour the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle.
