India fast bowler Yash Thakur has made it clear that becoming a specialist in death bowling has been the defining ambition of his cricket career. The promising pacer said he wants to develop into a bowler who can be trusted in any situation, drawing inspiration from India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, whose consistency and match-winning performances have set the benchmark for pace bowlers around the world.
Speaking to JioStar, Thakur reflected on the goals he established early in his senior cricket journey with Vidarbha. He revealed that he consciously decided to focus on bowling during the closing overs of limited-overs matches, believing those crucial moments often determine the outcome of a game.
According to Thakur, death bowling is one of the toughest challenges in modern cricket because it demands precision, composure and the ability to execute plans under immense pressure. He believes excelling in those situations can make a significant difference for any team.
“Ever since I started playing senior white-ball cricket for Vidarbha, I set one clear goal for myself: to become a specialist at death bowling. Matches are won and lost in the final overs, and that’s where I wanted to make a difference for my team,” Thakur said.
The right-arm seamer added that his philosophy has remained unchanged despite progressing through different stages of his career. Whether representing Vidarbha in domestic cricket, India A, or playing in the Indian Premier League, his objective has always been to thrive in high-pressure situations.
“I have carried that mindset with me throughout my career. Whether I am playing for Vidarbha, India A, or in the IPL, I see death bowling as the toughest challenge in cricket, and I want to master it. If I can perform in high-pressure situations, that is when I can truly make an impact,” he explained.
Thakur also highlighted the influence Jasprit Bumrah has had on his development as a fast bowler. He praised Bumrah’s remarkable ability to adapt across formats and different phases of an innings, whether with the new ball, during the middle overs, or at the death.
“I admire Jasprit Bumrah a lot because he bowls brilliantly in every format and in every phase of the game. He understands the situation and adapts accordingly,” Thakur said.
The young pacer emphasised that his ultimate ambition is not simply to imitate Bumrah’s style but to adopt the same mindset and reliability that have made India’s pace spearhead one of the world’s best bowlers.
“I try to follow his approach, to be a bowler the captain can trust at any stage, whether it’s the powerplay, the middle overs, or the death. My goal is to be someone who can pick up wickets and win games, just like Bumrah does for India,” Thakur added.
