A new report says India remains indispensable to the US Indo-Pacific vision despite recent diplomatic tensions. Strong cooperation in maritime security, economic resilience, technology, and regional stability continues to anchor the India-US strategic partnership and strengthen the Indo-Pacific framework.
A new report has reaffirmed that India continues to play an indispensable role in the United States’ Indo-Pacific strategy, stressing that the long-term strategic partnership between the two democracies remains firmly rooted in shared geopolitical interests despite recent diplomatic tensions.
The report, published by the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (IIIPS), states that the India-US relationship is built upon mutual interests in maritime security, economic resilience, technological innovation, and maintaining a stable regional order. While China’s growing regional influence has strengthened cooperation between New Delhi and Washington, the report argues that Beijing is not the principal reason behind the partnership.
According to the report, the real foundation of India-US ties lies in the strategic significance of the Indian Ocean and the recognition that a secure, prosperous, and influential India is essential for the success of America’s broader Indo-Pacific vision. The study notes that this enduring strategic logic continues to shape bilateral relations regardless of temporary political disagreements.
The report comes at a time when recent developments have raised concerns over the future direction of the partnership. It points to several decisions by the administration of US President Donald Trump that have generated unease in New Delhi. These include the reimposition of tariffs on Indian goods, the symbolic removal of the word “Indo” from references to the US Indo-Pacific Command, an official US map depicting Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as part of Pakistan, and renewed diplomatic engagement with Islamabad.
While these developments have been viewed by many observers as signs of increasing friction, the report argues that they should not be interpreted as evidence of a weakening strategic relationship. Instead, it suggests that the current tensions reflect a transactional style of foreign policy focused on short-term bargaining and symbolic messaging rather than any fundamental shift in America’s long-term strategic priorities.
The report highlights that individual leadership styles may influence diplomatic interactions, but they cannot alter enduring geopolitical realities. It notes that the India-US partnership has evolved over several decades through bipartisan support across successive American administrations.
Major milestones such as the landmark civil nuclear agreement, India’s designation as a Major Defence Partner, and the signing of key foundational defence agreements demonstrate Washington’s consistent recognition of India’s strategic importance in maintaining regional stability and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The report identifies the Indian Ocean as the true cornerstone of bilateral cooperation. For the United States, the region remains essential for sustaining military operations, protecting global trade routes, and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of energy supplies through critical maritime chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Diego Garcia military base.
For India, the Indian Ocean is equally vital. Nearly 95 percent of the country’s trade by volume passes through these waters, along with the majority of its energy imports. Ensuring the security of Sea Lines of Communication is therefore regarded not only as a defence priority but also as a critical economic necessity.
The report concludes that this shared dependence on a secure, open, and rules-based maritime environment creates a lasting strategic convergence between the two countries. Both India and the United States seek to prevent any single power from dominating the Indian Ocean and support a stable regional order that promotes peace, free navigation, and economic prosperity.

Emphasising the long-term outlook, the report states that the present diplomatic challenges should be viewed as a temporary political detour rather than the beginning of strategic separation. It adds that recognising the enduring geopolitical value of India will enable Washington to further strengthen one of the world’s most significant strategic partnerships and reinforce the Indo-Pacific vision for years to come.
