Chennai Grand Masters 2026 begins with world champion D. Gukesh facing Nihal Sarin in a blockbuster first-round clash. India’s top classical chess tournament features eight elite grandmasters competing for ₹75 lakh prize money and crucial FIDE Circuit points over seven days.

The fourth edition of the Chennai Grand Masters 2026, India’s premier classical chess tournament, is set to begin on Thursday at The Westin Chennai Velachery Hotel, promising a week of thrilling encounters featuring some of the strongest chess players in the world. The tournament opens with a highly anticipated first-round clash between reigning World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh and fellow Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin, a matchup expected to draw significant attention from chess enthusiasts across the globe.

The prestigious tournament brings together eight elite grandmasters in a double round-robin format, ensuring every participant faces each opponent twice during the seven-day competition. All matches are scheduled to commence daily at 3:00 PM IST, offering fans an opportunity to witness high-quality classical chess featuring established stars and emerging talents.

This year’s Chennai Grand Masters boasts a balanced field comprising four Indian grandmasters and four international stars. Besides Gukesh and Nihal Sarin, India’s challenge will be led by Arjun Erigaisi and M. Pranesh, while the overseas contingent includes Alireza Firouzja of France, Dmitry Andreikin, Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan, and Hans Niemann of the United States.

According to the official first-round draw, M. Pranesh, who won last year’s Challenger event, will play with the white pieces against French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja. Another exciting contest will feature Arjun Erigaisi taking on experienced Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Andreikin. The only opening-round game without Indian representation will see Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov face American Grandmaster Hans Niemann.

The tournament carries a total prize purse of ₹75 lakh, making it one of India’s richest classical chess competitions. Along with the substantial prize money, participants will compete for valuable FIDE Circuit points, which play a significant role in qualification pathways for elite international events.

Over the years, the Chennai Grand Masters has established itself as an important platform in the careers of India’s leading chess talents. The tournament holds special significance for D. Gukesh, who captured the inaugural Chennai Grand Masters title before progressing to qualify for the Candidates Tournament and eventually becoming the World Chess Champion. This year, Gukesh returns as the only former champion in the field, adding further prestige to the competition.

Ahead of the tournament, Sreekar Channapragada, Co-founder of MGD1, highlighted the growing importance of the event in promoting Indian chess on the global stage. He stated that the Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2026 is not only an elite tournament but also a valuable platform for India’s best players to compete against world-class opponents on home soil. He expressed confidence that the strength of the field and the quality of games would once again captivate chess fans throughout the tournament.
