Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder reviewed the final phase of the Ujan Abhoynagar Beautification Project before its inauguration by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. The restored heritage pond, revived after decades of neglect, will soon offer residents a modern recreational and environmentally friendly public space.
Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder on Sunday reviewed the final phase of the Ujan Abhoynagar Beautification Project, expressing satisfaction with the progress of the ambitious initiative that has transformed a long-neglected heritage pond into a modern public attraction. The project is now nearing completion and is expected to be formally inaugurated later this month by Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha.
The heritage pond, located near the Ujan Abhoynagar market in Ward No. 11, had remained abandoned for nearly five decades. Over the years, the waterbody had turned into a dumping ground filled with garbage, posing environmental concerns and diminishing the area’s aesthetic appeal. Recognizing its historical and environmental significance, the Agartala Municipal Corporation undertook a comprehensive beautification and restoration project to revive the neglected site.
During the inspection, Mayor Dipak Majumder carefully reviewed the quality of the ongoing work and assessed the final preparations ahead of the inauguration ceremony. Ward No. 11 Councillor Hiralal Debnath and officials of the Agartala Municipal Corporation accompanied the Mayor during the visit.
Speaking after the inspection, Mayor Majumder said the beautification initiative was aimed at giving the abandoned pond a new identity while improving the surrounding environment. He stated that the Municipal Corporation has focused on developing the site into a clean, attractive, and accessible public space where residents can spend quality time with their families.
The Mayor assured that the remaining works would be completed within the stipulated timeframe so that the Chief Minister’s inauguration programme could be conducted as scheduled. He also emphasized that the project reflects the government’s commitment to urban development, environmental conservation, and the creation of quality public infrastructure for citizens.
The rejuvenated pond is expected to emerge as a major recreational destination in the city. Apart from enhancing the visual appeal of the locality, the project is anticipated to contribute to environmental improvement by restoring the ecological balance of the waterbody and providing a cleaner atmosphere for nearby residents.
Local residents have welcomed the transformation, describing it as a significant improvement for the neighbourhood. Many believe the restored pond will become a popular destination for morning and evening walks, leisure activities, and community gatherings while adding to the overall beauty of Agartala.
