Heavy rainfall in Teliamura triggered the collapse of a massive banyan tree, destroying two homes, injuring several family members, and leaving families homeless. MLA Kalyani Roy visited the site, assured government assistance, and raised concerns over alleged negligence by the electricity department.
A devastating incident caused by continuous heavy rainfall has left two families homeless and several people injured after a massive banyan tree crashed onto their houses in the Howaibari Thangnai Bazar area under West Howaibari Gram Panchayat in Teliamura late on Saturday night.
According to local sources, days of relentless rainfall weakened the soil, causing the giant banyan tree to uproot and collapse onto the homes of Nitai Sarkar and Shankar Sarkar. The impact completely damaged the residential structures, leaving the families in distress. Members of Shankar Sarkar’s family sustained serious injuries in the accident, while Nitai Sarkar’s family escaped major physical injuries despite suffering extensive damage to their house and belongings.
Hearing the cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot and launched an immediate rescue operation. The injured were rescued from the debris and shifted to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
On Sunday morning, the disaster response team led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate began clearing the uprooted tree and assessing the damage. Later in the day, Teliamura MLA and Chief Whip of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Kalyani Roy, visited the affected area along with DCM Pradip Kumar Sarkar and Disaster Management Officer Genius Debbarma.

During her visit, MLA Kalyani Roy interacted with the affected families, inquired about the condition of the injured, and assured them of all possible government assistance. She stated that immediate medical care would be provided to those injured in the incident and that the government would extend support for the construction of new houses under applicable welfare schemes.
Sharing details of her visit, the MLA said that after receiving information about the tragic incident, she personally reached the location to assess the situation and discuss arrangements for prompt treatment of the injured. She also expressed solidarity with the affected family during this difficult period. Panchayat Pradhan Ranjit Das, Deputy Pradhan Gopal Sarkar, DCM Pradip Sarkar, and several BJP workers were also present and extended support to the victims.
Speaking to the media, Kalyani Roy expressed strong dissatisfaction with the functioning of the electricity department. She alleged that local residents had repeatedly warned officials about the dangerous condition of large trees located near electricity lines, but no preventive measures were taken. Following the incident, allegations of negligence have surfaced against Teliamura Electricity Corporation Junior Manager Biswajit Biswas.
