North Tripura’s Anandabazar rice theft case exposes forged SDM seal and signature used to illegally siphon off 145 metric tonnes of government rice worth over Rs 46 lakh. Seven officials have been suspended as a high-level inquiry investigates the large-scale food grain misappropriation.

A massive food grain misappropriation case has sent shockwaves across North Tripura after investigators uncovered an alleged theft of 145 metric tonnes of government rice worth more than Rs 46 lakh from the Anandabazar government warehouse. The case has taken a serious turn following revelations that forged official documents bearing the fake signature and seal of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) were allegedly used to facilitate the illegal removal of food grains.

According to officials, the irregularities were detected during a routine verification of government records. Investigators found discrepancies in warehouse stock registers and delivery records, prompting a detailed examination of official documents. Preliminary findings indicate that forged delivery challans carrying fake SDM authorization were prepared to illegally transport large quantities of rice from the government warehouse over an extended period.

Following the discovery, Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ashis Biswas constituted a special inquiry committee to investigate the suspected fraud. The committee has been tasked with scrutinizing warehouse stock registers, transportation records, delivery challans, and all related documents to determine the exact quantity of rice that was misappropriated and identify those responsible.

Officials involved in the investigation stated that nearly 145 metric tonnes of rice valued at over Rs 46 lakh are currently unaccounted for. However, authorities believe the actual financial loss to the government could be significantly higher once the inquiry is completed and all records are verified.

Taking immediate administrative action, the district administration has suspended seven officials allegedly linked to the case. Show cause notices have also been issued, directing them to submit their explanations within three days. Those facing disciplinary proceedings include local fair price shop operators, a warehouse storekeeper, and a Circle Inspector (CI). Authorities have made it clear that stricter action, including departmental and legal proceedings, will follow if the allegations are substantiated during the investigation.

The incident has sparked widespread public outrage in Kanchanpur and surrounding areas, with residents demanding strict action against everyone involved in the alleged corruption. Many have expressed concern over the misuse of government welfare resources intended for beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Meanwhile, the inquiry committee continues its investigation to establish the full extent of the alleged rice theft, determine how forged government seals and signatures were used, and uncover whether a larger organised network was involved. The administration has assured that those found guilty will face stringent legal and departmental action after the final investigation report is submitted.
