A Hindu Bangladeshi couple searching for a safer future in India was detained in Tripura’s South district after illegally crossing the international border. Police recovered Bangladeshi SIM cards and launched an investigation into the infiltration route, highlighting ongoing concerns over border security and illegal immigration in the northeastern state.

A Hindu Bangladeshi couple seeking what they described as a safer and more secure future in India was detained by police in South Tripura district after allegedly entering Indian territory through an illegal route. The incident has once again brought the spotlight on border security and illegal infiltration along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura.

The couple, identified as Santanu Debnath and his wife, was intercepted by police at Debdaru under South Tripura district while travelling on a passenger bus. According to police, their suspicious behaviour and inability to provide valid identity documents prompted officers to question them, eventually leading to the revelation that they were citizens of Bangladesh.

Speaking after his detention, Santanu Debnath claimed that he and his wife had been facing severe hardships in Bangladesh, forcing them to leave their homeland in search of a safer place to settle.

“We have been enduring a lot of trouble in Bangladesh. It had become impossible for us to continue living there. That is why we decided to cross the border in search of a brighter and safer future,” Debnath said. He stated that he is a resident of Chittagong in Bangladesh.

Debnath further explained that he had earlier visited the border region during a college picnic, where he learned that people could cross into India through the Matiranga border area near Khagrachari. According to him, this information encouraged the couple to attempt the journey.

“I told my wife that we should also take the chance because living in Bangladesh was no longer a safe option. We crossed the border and boarded a bus hoping to reach a safe destination, but the police intercepted the vehicle and arrested us midway,” he said.

However, despite referring to hardships in Bangladesh, Debnath did not elaborate on the specific circumstances or incidents that compelled the couple to leave the country.

Officials at the Debdaru Outpost said they received intelligence inputs regarding suspicious passengers travelling through the area. Acting on the information, police intercepted a bus and questioned the couple after noticing inconsistencies in their statements and language.

“We received specific information and intercepted the bus. During questioning, the two individuals displayed suspicious behaviour and could not produce valid documents proving Indian citizenship. Their responses also contained several inconsistencies. They were subsequently brought to the police station for detailed interrogation,” the Officer-in-Charge of Debdaru Outpost said.

During the search, police recovered two mobile phones and two Bangladeshi SIM cards from their possession, further strengthening suspicions regarding their nationality.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple allegedly entered Indian territory through the Silachari border area in Gomati district before travelling towards South Tripura. Police are now investigating the exact route they used, whether they received assistance from any intermediaries, and if a larger cross-border network facilitated their illegal entry.

Authorities have initiated a detailed investigation into the case under relevant provisions governing illegal entry and border violations. Officials are also examining whether any human trafficking or organised infiltration network was involved in helping the couple cross the international border.

Police officials stated that further legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
