Northeast Frontier Railway (NRF) has announced the launch of the Agartala–Karimganj electric MEMU train service, marking a major milestone in Tripura’s rail connectivity. NFR GM Chetan Kumar Shrivastava also highlighted station modernization, railway electrification, freight infrastructure expansion, and a proposed Badarpur–Agartala double-line rail project.

Tripura is poised for a significant transformation in railway connectivity as the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced the introduction of an electric MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train service between Agartala and Karimganj in the near future. The development is expected to enhance passenger convenience, improve travel efficiency, and strengthen regional connectivity across the Northeast.

The announcement was made by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava during a press conference held at Agartala Railway Station on Friday following his two-day inspection of railway infrastructure and operational facilities in Tripura.

According to Shrivastava, the upcoming electric MEMU service will offer greater passenger comfort, increased carrying capacity, and improved operational efficiency. Significantly, the Agartala–Karimganj section will become the first route under the Northeast Frontier Railway network to operate MEMU services, marking a new chapter in railway transportation in the region.

The General Manager, accompanied by senior railway officials, carried out an extensive inspection of railway facilities at Agartala and Sekerkote Railway Stations under the Lumding Division. The visit focused on reviewing infrastructure development, passenger amenities, freight operations, and ongoing modernization projects.

A major highlight of the visit was the progress of redevelopment work being undertaken under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Shrivastava stated that construction of the new Agartala Railway Station building is progressing steadily. The modern three-storey station complex is being developed at an estimated first-phase cost of Rs 48 crore and is expected to be completed by March 2027.

Railway officials informed that the redeveloped station will be equipped with modern passenger facilities, enhanced waiting areas, improved accessibility features, and upgraded infrastructure designed to accommodate increasing passenger traffic in the coming years. Authorities are also planning to increase the number of platforms at the station to support future growth in rail services.

During the inspection, the NFR General Manager inaugurated newly installed lifts on Platforms 1 and 2 at Agartala Railway Station. The facility has been introduced to ensure easier movement for elderly passengers, persons with disabilities, and travelers carrying luggage.

Shrivastava also reviewed several passenger-centric facilities, including waiting halls, ticket booking counters, automatic ticket vending machines, security scanning systems, and retiring rooms. He emphasized the importance of providing modern and efficient services to passengers as rail traffic continues to increase across the state.

Apart from Agartala, modernization projects at Udaipur Railway Station and Kumarghat Railway Station are progressing rapidly. Railway authorities expect these redevelopment works to be completed by September this year, further improving travel experiences for passengers across Tripura.

The NFR chief also highlighted progress in freight transportation infrastructure. He stated that goods trains are already operating regularly through Nischintapur Railway Station, contributing to the smooth movement of commodities and strengthening logistics networks in the state.

At Sekerkote Railway Station, several construction-related projects involving Indian Railways, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and the state Public Works Department are nearing completion. Officials expect these works to be finished by August, creating additional infrastructure support for freight and industrial activities.

Another major achievement highlighted during the visit was the completion of railway electrification from Sabroom to Guwahati. Shrivastava said the electrification project has been successfully completed, although a minor technical issue affecting power supply near New Haflong Railway Station is currently being addressed by railway engineers.

Looking toward the future, the General Manager revealed that Indian Railways is considering a proposed double-line railway project between Badarpur and Agartala. The project, if approved and implemented, would significantly enhance rail capacity, improve operational flexibility, and strengthen connectivity between Tripura and the rest of the country.

During his visit, Shrivastava was accompanied by Sameer Lohani and other senior officials. Earlier, he had inspected the ongoing IOCL oil depot project at Sekerkote and reviewed operations at the Nischintapur rail yard.

According to NFR officials, Tripura has witnessed remarkable growth in railway infrastructure since the introduction of broad-gauge connectivity to Agartala in 2016. Several landmark projects, including the Agartala–Akhaura International Rail Link, the Narangi–Agartala Express, and the proposed introduction of Electric MEMU and Vande Bharat services, are expected to further strengthen transportation networks.

These initiatives are anticipated to improve passenger convenience, support trade and commerce, boost tourism, and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Tripura and the wider Northeast region. With the launch of the Agartala–Karimganj electric MEMU service on the horizon and plans for future rail expansion under consideration, Tripura’s railway sector is entering a new phase of modernization and growth.
