Agartala Railway Station is set for a Rs 48-crore redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with modern passenger amenities, commercial facilities, and improved infrastructure. Northeast Frontier Railway also plans to launch the Agartala-Karimganj MEMU service within 10 days, enhancing regional connectivity across Tripura and Assam.

Agartala Railway Station is poised for a major transformation under the Central Government’s ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with Phase-I redevelopment works receiving a sanctioned investment of Rs 48 crore. Alongside the station modernisation project, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is preparing to introduce a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) passenger train service between Agartala in Tripura and Karimganj in southern Assam within the next 10 days, significantly strengthening regional rail connectivity.

The announcement was made by Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava during a two-day inspection tour of railway infrastructure and operational facilities across Tripura under the Lumding Division.

According to railway officials, the redevelopment of Agartala Railway Station will usher in a new era of passenger convenience and modern infrastructure. As part of the project, a new three-storey station building will be constructed at the centre of the station complex, transforming the appearance and functionality of one of the Northeast’s key railway hubs.

Shrivastava, accompanied by senior railway officials, conducted a detailed assessment of railway tracks, passenger amenities, station infrastructure and ongoing development projects. The inspection focused on evaluating operational efficiency, safety standards, passenger comfort and future expansion requirements.

The Rs 48-crore station redevelopment project is targeted for completion by March next year. Once completed, passengers can expect a range of modern facilities designed to enhance travel experiences. The upgraded station will include commercial spaces, restaurants, cafeterias, improved waiting areas, modern retiring rooms, low-cost sleeping pods, enhanced parking facilities and a well-planned circulating area for smoother movement of passengers and vehicles.

One of the major highlights of the project is the improvement of accommodation facilities within the station premises. The existing three retiring rooms, currently considered inadequate and outdated, will be replaced with eight to ten modern rooms equipped with better amenities. Railway authorities believe these upgraded facilities will particularly benefit tourists, business travellers and visitors staying in Tripura for short periods.

In addition to the redevelopment of Agartala Railway Station, progress is also being made on similar projects at Kumarghat in North Tripura and Udaipur in Gomati district under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Shrivastava stated that these station modernisation works are progressing steadily and are expected to be completed by September this year.

The NFR General Manager further revealed that railway authorities are considering future expansion plans for Agartala Railway Station. Depending on passenger traffic growth and operational requirements, the number of platforms could eventually be increased from the current three to five. Such an expansion would enable the station to handle a greater number of trains and accommodate increasing passenger demand in the years ahead.

Addressing concerns related to overcrowding and passenger convenience, Shrivastava announced that the Agartala-Karimganj MEMU train service is expected to commence shortly. The service is likely to operate six days a week and will become the first MEMU service under the Northeast Frontier Railway zone.

The proposed MEMU service is expected to provide a reliable and affordable transportation option for daily commuters, students, office-goers and travellers moving between Tripura and southern Assam. Railway officials believe the service will significantly improve regional mobility and reduce travel-related challenges faced by passengers in the region.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve railway safety and passenger comfort, the General Manager also announced that all remaining Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches operating under NFR would be replaced by safer and more advanced Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches by the end of the current financial year. LHB coaches are known for enhanced safety features, better ride quality and improved passenger comfort.

Highlighting the railway’s infrastructure achievements, Shrivastava said that 100 percent railway electrification has already been completed across the Northeast Frontier Railway network. He noted that necessary training programmes and operational preparations are currently underway before the commencement of full-scale electric train operations across the region.

The inspection tour also included a review of ongoing railway-related development projects in Tripura. Shrivastava informed that collaborative infrastructure works at Sekerkote involving the Railways, the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) are expected to be completed by the end of August.

Another significant project currently under development is a new petroleum terminal siding. Once completed, the facility will facilitate the movement of fuel wagons and strengthen Tripura’s fuel storage infrastructure. Officials believe the project will enable the state to maintain fuel reserves sufficient for approximately 30 days, enhancing energy security and logistical efficiency.

The General Manager credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government for providing the resources and policy support necessary for the rapid expansion and modernisation of railway infrastructure across the Northeast.

NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma emphasised the importance of regular inspections in Tripura, where challenging terrain and heavy rainfall require constant monitoring to ensure safe and reliable train operations.

During the visit, Shrivastava also inspected the Agartala Coaching Depot, where he reviewed coach maintenance standards, cleanliness measures, safety compliance procedures and operational preparedness. He additionally visited the Running Room at Agartala to assess accommodation facilities, hygiene standards and amenities provided to train crew members.

Sharma highlighted the remarkable transformation of rail connectivity in Tripura since the introduction of broad-gauge railway services to Agartala in 2016. He noted that major initiatives such as the Agartala-Akhaura international rail link with Bangladesh, the Narangi-Agartala Express, and the proposed MEMU and Vande Bharat services are contributing significantly to regional connectivity and economic development.

Railway officials believe that the ongoing redevelopment projects, improved passenger amenities and expansion of train services will further strengthen Tripura’s integration with the national railway network. The initiatives are expected to boost tourism, facilitate trade, improve mobility and support the overall socio-economic development of the state and the wider Northeast region.
