Police in West Bengal have arrested six individuals in connection with the alleged attack and harassment of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district. The arrests came after an overnight search operation conducted by local police following the incident that triggered political reactions and raised concerns regarding the security arrangements for the senior Trinamool leader.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Abhishek Banerjee visited Sonarpur to meet the family members of a deceased Trinamool Congress worker. During the visit, he reportedly faced public outrage from a section of protesters who gathered along the route. According to reports, some individuals allegedly threw eggs and brick fragments at the MP while raising slogans against him.
As Banerjee proceeded towards the residence of the deceased party worker, the situation reportedly turned tense. Eyewitness accounts suggested that some protesters attempted to physically confront him, while others allegedly heckled and verbally abused the Trinamool leader. Security personnel accompanying Banerjee intervened to prevent any direct physical assault and escorted him through the area amid heightened tensions.
The episode immediately sparked questions regarding the adequacy of police security provided to the MP. Following the incident, law enforcement agencies launched an investigation and initiated a search operation in the locality during the night.
Police officials stated that video footage from the scene was carefully examined as part of the investigation. Based on preliminary findings and visual evidence, six individuals were identified and subsequently arrested. According to police sources, all six arrested persons are local residents and were allegedly present at the location during the disturbance.
Authorities confirmed that the arrested individuals are being interrogated to determine whether additional persons were involved in organizing or participating in the alleged attack. Police teams continue to gather evidence and monitor the situation in the area to prevent any further unrest.
“The search operation was carried out at night. Till Sunday morning, six people have been arrested. Investigation is on,” a police official said.
Following the incident, Abhishek Banerjee was taken under police protection to a private hospital located along Kolkata’s EM Bypass for medical examination. Doctors reportedly provided primary treatment and informed him that hospitalization was not required. He was later taken to another private hospital near Minto Park, where medical professionals reportedly reached a similar conclusion.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accompanied Abhishek Banerjee during his medical consultations. Reacting strongly to the incident, she criticized the BJP and expressed concern over the attack on the Trinamool Congress leader.
Addressing the media, Mamata Banerjee stated that Abhishek would continue treatment from home and would receive any necessary medical support there. She further indicated that if his condition required advanced care, arrangements could be made to shift him to Hyderabad for treatment.
