India opened their campaign at the U18 Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2026 with an impressive 2-1 victory over Malaysia in a closely contested Pool A encounter on Saturday. The young Indian side displayed determination, attacking intent, and defensive resilience to secure all three points in their first match of the tournament.
Fifteen-year-old forward Nousheen Naz emerged as the standout performer of the contest, scoring both goals for India and earning the prestigious Player of the Match award. Her clinical finishing and composure in front of goal proved decisive as India overcame a spirited challenge from Malaysia to begin their campaign on a positive note.
The opening quarter witnessed an evenly matched battle, with both teams testing each other’s defensive structures. India enjoyed greater possession and looked more threatening in attack, creating several opportunities inside the Malaysian circle. However, Malaysia’s defence remained organized and disciplined, successfully preventing the Indian forwards from finding the breakthrough. As a result, the first quarter ended goalless despite India’s attacking dominance.
India’s persistence finally paid off in the second quarter when Nousheen Naz opened the scoring in the 19th minute. The young striker reacted quickly during a penalty corner situation and calmly slotted the ball into the net, giving India a deserved 1-0 lead. The goal boosted India’s confidence as they continued to press forward and control the tempo of the match.
Just before the half-time whistle, India doubled their advantage through the impressive Nousheen. In the 28th minute, she produced another fine finish after a well-constructed attacking move, beating the Malaysian goalkeeper and extending India’s lead to 2-0. The second goal provided India with a comfortable cushion heading into the break and highlighted the attacking quality of the talented forward.
Malaysia returned for the second half with renewed energy and determination. The opposition increased their attacking intensity and managed to put India under pressure. Their efforts were rewarded in the 41st minute when Nur Azli found the back of the net to reduce the deficit to 2-1. The goal breathed new life into the Malaysian side and set up an intense final quarter.
Despite Malaysia’s late push for an equaliser, India’s defence stood firm under pressure. The backline remained disciplined, successfully neutralising multiple attacking threats and preserving the narrow lead. The team’s collective defensive effort played a crucial role in ensuring that India maintained their advantage until the final whistle.
India’s attacking dominance throughout the match was reflected in the 16 penalty corners they earned. Although they converted only one directly, the continuous pressure created numerous scoring opportunities and ultimately proved decisive in securing the victory.
With the win, India moved to second place in Pool A, level on three points with Korea, who occupy the top position on goal difference. The encouraging result provides India with early momentum as they continue their quest for success in the continental tournament.
