Italy intensifies security measures in Rome ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-level summit with Giorgia Meloni at Villa Pamphili, focusing on strategic cooperation, trade, defence, investment, and diplomatic engagements during the crucial bilateral visit.
Extensive security arrangements have been put in place across Rome ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Italy, where he is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with the country’s top leadership, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella.
Italian authorities have placed Villa Pamphili, the venue for the bilateral summit between Modi and Meloni, under special surveillance as part of a broad security strategy prepared for the Indian Prime Minister’s visit. According to reports by Italian news agency Adnkronos, law enforcement agencies have implemented a “specific security system” tailored to the geography and nature of every location included in the Prime Minister’s itinerary.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to arrive in Rome this evening. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani is scheduled to receive him at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport at around 7:30 p.m. local time. Security at the airport has already been strengthened, with additional personnel deployed to monitor passenger movement and prevent any disruptions during the arrival of the Indian delegation.
During his stay in the Italian capital, Prime Minister Modi will reside at the Anantara Hotel located in Piazza della Repubblica. Authorities have increased surveillance in the surrounding area, with regular patrols and special security checks being conducted to ensure complete safety throughout the visit.
Italian intelligence agencies are also actively involved in the security operation. Reports indicate that the Italian Special Operations Unit and the Postal Police have intensified monitoring activities aimed at intercepting suspicious communications and preventing potential cyber or physical threats. Security experts are coordinating closely to maintain uninterrupted protection at all venues connected to the visit.
Prime Minister Modi’s official engagements will begin tomorrow with a visit to the Quirinale Palace, where he is scheduled to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella. The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening diplomatic ties and enhancing cooperation between the two nations across multiple sectors.
Following the presidential meeting, Modi will participate in a bilateral summit with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Villa Pamphili, one of Rome’s most prominent official venues. The location has been brought under heightened surveillance due to the significance of the talks and the presence of senior officials from both countries.
After the summit discussions, the two leaders are expected to attend a working lunch alongside executives and representatives from several major Indian and Italian industrial groups. The interaction is likely to focus on trade expansion, investment opportunities, technological collaboration, clean energy partnerships, and industrial cooperation.
In the early afternoon, Prime Minister Modi will also visit the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) before concluding his visit and departing from Italy.
The visit comes at a time when bilateral relations between India and Italy are witnessing notable growth. Prime Minister Modi had previously visited Italy in June 2024 to attend the Group of Seven Summit, where both countries reaffirmed their commitment to expanding strategic cooperation.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the current visit is taking place amid “strong momentum” in bilateral relations. Both nations are actively implementing the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, which serves as a roadmap for collaboration in trade, investment, defence, security, innovation, clean energy, science and technology, and cultural exchanges.
Official figures released by the ministry show that bilateral trade between India and Italy reached approximately USD 16.77 billion in 2025. Italian foreign direct investment into India also recorded cumulative inflows of nearly USD 3.66 billion between April 2000 and September 2025.

Diplomatic observers believe the Modi-Meloni discussions could further strengthen economic and strategic ties while expanding cooperation in emerging sectors. With security agencies maintaining strict vigilance throughout Rome, the visit is being viewed as one of the most closely monitored diplomatic engagements in Italy this year.
