PM Modi will visit Sweden during the third leg of his five-nation tour to strengthen India-Sweden cooperation in trade, green technology, innovation, defence manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and strategic partnerships following his successful visit to the Netherlands.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Sunday as part of the third leg of his ongoing five-nation diplomatic tour aimed at strengthening India’s global partnerships and expanding cooperation in key strategic sectors. The visit comes at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and is expected to further deepen bilateral relations between India and Sweden across trade, innovation, green technology, artificial intelligence, and emerging industries.

The two-day visit, scheduled for May 17 and 18, marks another important step in India’s growing engagement with Nordic and European nations. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Modi had previously visited Sweden in 2018 during the first-ever India-Nordic Summit, which laid the foundation for closer cooperation between India and the Nordic region.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Kristersson are expected to hold extensive bilateral discussions covering the full spectrum of India-Sweden relations. The talks will focus on identifying fresh opportunities for collaboration in areas such as sustainable development, advanced manufacturing, digital innovation, climate action, startups, defence production, and resilient supply chains.

The MEA stated that bilateral trade between India and Sweden has reached approximately USD 7.75 billion in 2025, while Swedish foreign direct investment in India has touched nearly USD 2.825 billion between 2000 and 2025. Both countries are expected to explore additional measures to expand economic engagement and investment opportunities.

Sweden is widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading innovation-driven economies, with strong expertise in green transition technologies, clean energy solutions, and research-based industries. India, on the other hand, has emerged as a major global technology and manufacturing hub, making the partnership increasingly significant for both nations.

One of the major highlights of the visit will be Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the European Round Table for Industry, a leading platform representing influential European business leaders and industrial stakeholders. Prime Minister Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are also expected to address the gathering alongside PM Modi. The meeting is likely to focus on investment opportunities, economic cooperation, and future industrial partnerships between India and Europe.

The Sweden visit follows Prime Minister Modi’s official two-day trip to the Netherlands, where he held high-level talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and members of the Dutch leadership. This was PM Modi’s second visit to the Netherlands and reflected the growing importance of India’s relations with European countries.

On May 16, PM Modi was welcomed by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at the Royal Palace Huis ten Bosch in The Hague. The leaders held bilateral discussions followed by a luncheon hosted in honour of the Indian Prime Minister.

Later, Prime Minister Jetten and PM Modi conducted delegation-level and restricted talks aimed at strengthening cooperation in multiple sectors, including trade, innovation, renewable energy, water management, and digital technologies. The two leaders also acknowledged the long-standing trade connections and deep people-to-people ties between India and the Netherlands.

India and the Netherlands additionally reviewed their cooperation during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023 and the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi in February 2026. Recognising the growing strategic alignment and increasing collaboration between the two countries, both sides decided to elevate bilateral relations to the level of a “Strategic Partnership.”

With the Sweden visit now underway, India is expected to continue strengthening its diplomatic and economic outreach across Europe. The ongoing five-nation tour is being viewed as a major effort to expand India’s international partnerships in critical sectors including innovation, defence, climate action, and emerging technologies while reinforcing the country’s growing role in global affairs.
