Tripura government introduces austerity measures to reduce expenditure, implementing work-from-home rules for 50 percent of Group C and D employees following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and reduced operational costs across government departments.

The Tripura government has introduced a series of austerity measures aimed at reducing public expenditure and conserving fuel by limiting physical attendance in government offices. The decision comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens and institutions across the country to adopt fuel-saving practices and encourage work-from-home arrangements wherever possible.

According to an official memorandum issued by the General Administration (Administrative Reforms) Department, all Heads of Department (HoDs) have been instructed to ensure that only 50 percent of Group C and Group D employees attend office on any given day. The remaining employees will work remotely from home under a roster-based system.

The memorandum stated that HoDs must prepare a weekly duty roster for employees in these categories, ensuring that staff members attend office on alternate weeks. Authorities were also advised to prioritize employees residing near their respective offices while preparing the roster for the first week of implementation. The move is expected to reduce transportation-related fuel consumption as well as operational expenses linked to office functioning.

Government officials working from home under the newly introduced arrangement have been directed to remain accessible through telephone and electronic communication platforms at all times during office hours. The order further clarified that employees may be asked to report physically to office in case of urgent administrative requirements or emergency work situations.

The austerity measures are not limited to government departments alone. Similar directives have also been issued to Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), local bodies, autonomous organizations, statutory bodies, and all subordinate offices functioning under the Tripura government. Officials believe that coordinated implementation across departments and institutions will contribute significantly to reducing administrative expenditure during the current economic situation.

However, the state government has exempted offices and employees engaged in essential and emergency services from the new restrictions. Departments dealing with critical public services, emergency response systems, healthcare, law enforcement, and other indispensable operations will continue to function normally to avoid disruption of public services.

The memorandum carrying the new instructions was signed by A.K. Bhattacharya, Special Secretary to the Government of Tripura. The order has come into effect immediately and will remain operational until further notification from the state government.

Administrative experts believe that the move reflects a broader effort by state governments to align with national calls for resource conservation and efficient governance. By reducing the number of employees commuting daily and minimizing office-related expenditure, the government expects to lower fuel consumption while maintaining continuity in administrative functioning through digital communication systems.

The latest decision also highlights the increasing adoption of flexible work models in government administration, a practice that gained prominence during the pandemic years and continues to influence policy planning in several states. Officials indicated that the effectiveness of the new system will be monitored closely in the coming weeks to assess its impact on productivity, expenditure management, and public service delivery across Tripura.
