Tripura Food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury urged stronger public distribution measures, improved ration supply monitoring, and enhanced consumer protection during a state-level seminar and review meeting in Agartala focused on safe products and transparent PDS operations.
Renewed efforts to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and improve consumer confidence were highlighted on Friday during a state-level consumer awareness seminar held at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala. The programme, themed “Safe Products, Confident Consumer,” was organized by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department and attended by fair price shop dealers, merchant associations, and senior government officials from different subdivisions of Tripura.
Addressing the gathering, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said the state government remains committed to ensuring that the benefits of the public distribution network reach every section of society without disruption. He stated that the department is continuously working to strengthen the delivery mechanism of essential commodities while also protecting consumer rights across the state.
The Minister emphasized that an efficient and transparent PDS is crucial for maintaining food security and public trust. According to him, the government’s objective is not only to ensure regular supply of ration items but also to simplify access to essential services for the people of Tripura. He noted that consumer confidence depends largely on reliable service delivery and the availability of safe products through the distribution network.
Alongside the seminar, a detailed review meeting was conducted with fair price shop dealers and representatives of various merchant associations to assess the current functioning of the PDS and the supply of essential commodities. During the interaction, several stakeholders raised concerns related to distribution challenges, supply management, and operational issues faced at the grassroots level.

Chowdhury listened to the grievances and discussed possible solutions to overcome bottlenecks in the system. He directed senior officials of the department to remain alert and ensure that consumers do not face unnecessary difficulties or irregularities while accessing ration supplies. He also instructed officials to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and improve coordination at all administrative levels to maintain uninterrupted delivery of essential goods.
The Minister highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in strengthening the food security network of the state. He said cooperation among ration dealers, merchant associations, and government authorities is essential for improving transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the distribution process. Stressing the need for coordinated action, he urged all stakeholders associated with the PDS to work together in the larger interest of the public.
Officials attending the review meeting assured that necessary steps would be taken to streamline supply chains, enhance monitoring systems, and address public grievances in a timely manner. They also reiterated the department’s commitment to improving service standards and ensuring that essential commodities reach beneficiaries without delay.
The seminar also focused on consumer awareness and the importance of safe products in the market. Participants discussed the need for greater public awareness regarding consumer rights and responsibilities, as well as measures to prevent unfair practices in the supply and sale of essential goods.
