Assam Assembly Election 2026 vote counting begins amid tight security, deciding the fate of key leaders like Himanta Biswa Sarma and Gaurav Gogoi, as BJP-led NDA seeks a third term against a strong opposition challenge.

A decisive political moment is unfolding in Assam as counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections begins on Monday under extensive security arrangements. The outcome will determine whether the ruling alliance secures a third consecutive term or if opposition forces manage a significant breakthrough in one of India’s most politically dynamic states.

Across all 35 districts, counting is being conducted at 40 designated centres, with authorities ensuring strict protocols and surveillance. Electronic Voting Machines containing votes from all 126 constituencies have been secured in strong rooms under continuous monitoring. Districts with larger electorates, such as Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat, have been provided with multiple counting venues to streamline the process and avoid logistical bottlenecks.

Security remains a central focus. Around 25 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed to guard counting centres and strong rooms, while nearly 800 unarmed police personnel are managing the transportation of voting machines. Additional forces, including reserve units and state police contingents, have been strategically positioned to ensure a smooth and incident-free counting process. Special assault teams have also been formed to respond rapidly to any unexpected situations.

The election, held on April 9, witnessed a remarkable voter turnout of 85.96 percent, reflecting high public engagement. More than 2.5 crore eligible voters participated in deciding the political future of the state. A total of 722 candidates contested the elections, including 59 women, indicating a diverse and competitive electoral landscape.

Among the key political figures whose fortunes will be decided are Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia. Other prominent names include AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, Member of Parliament Akhil Gogoi, and Assam Jatiya Parishad leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, is aiming to retain power for a third consecutive term. The Congress-led opposition alliance, however, is seeking to capitalize on voter sentiment and present a strong challenge. Several regional and national parties, including the Asom Gana Parishad, All India United Democratic Front, Aam Aadmi Party, and Trinamool Congress, have added further complexity to the electoral battle.

The scale of the contest is evident from the number of candidates fielded by major parties. The Congress led with 99 candidates, followed by the BJP with 90. Regional parties and independent candidates have also played a significant role, reflecting Assam’s multifaceted political environment.

Political analysts suggest that the results will not only influence governance in Assam but also carry broader implications for the northeastern region. The state has emerged as a crucial political battleground, and the verdict is expected to shape policy direction, development priorities, and alliance strategies over the next five years.

As counting progresses, attention remains fixed on the unfolding trends, with early leads likely to set the tone for the final outcome. The results are expected to be closely watched across the country, given their potential impact on regional and national politics.
