In Gujarat, counting of votes is underway for the local body elections. Early trends show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading in all 15 municipal corporations and with decisive leads in rural local bodies.
In municipalities, the BJP has won 872 seats, while the Congress has secured 128 seats and others 68 seats. In district panchayats, the BJP has won 263 seats, with the Congress securing 30 seats and others winning 12 seats. In taluka panchayats, the BJP is leading with 1,262 seats, followed by the Congress with 260 and others with 99 seats.
Voting was held on Sunday for elections to 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats in the state. Counting began peacefully today across 382 counting centres.
The elections, contested by major parties including the BJP, Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party, along with Independents, are being seen as an important indicator of political strength at the grassroots level.
