Unakoti intensifies measles-rubella surveillance as NHM Director reviews vaccination gaps, orders urgent immunization drive, strengthens health infrastructure, and warns against complacency amid Bangladesh outbreak concerns to safeguard children and prevent disease spread in Tripura.

Heightened surveillance and targeted vaccination efforts have been intensified in Tripura’s Unakoti district following a high-level review by Saju Vaheed A, who assessed the current measles and rubella situation on the ground. The visit underscores the administration’s proactive approach to containing potential outbreaks and strengthening public health preparedness.

Arriving in Kailashahar on Sunday morning, the National Health Mission (NHM) State Director convened a comprehensive review meeting at the Circuit House with key district officials, including Dr. Tamal Majumdar and senior health authorities. Detailed discussions focused on infection patterns, surveillance mechanisms, and the progress of immunization coverage across vulnerable populations.

Health officials presented updated data on measles and rubella cases, highlighting both achievements and existing gaps in vaccination outreach. Particular attention was given to children who remain outside the immunization network, prompting urgent directives to enhance door-to-door tracking and awareness campaigns.

Following the meeting, Vaheed conducted field inspections to evaluate healthcare delivery at the grassroots level. At the Irani Primary Health Centre in the Gournagar block, he interacted directly with frontline healthcare workers, assessing logistical challenges and community response to vaccination drives. He emphasized the need to address vaccine hesitancy through sustained public engagement and education.

The NHM Director also visited the Unakoti District Hospital at Bhagaban Nagar, where he reviewed the preparedness of isolation wards and the availability of essential medical infrastructure. Instructions were issued to maintain strict adherence to national health guidelines and ensure uninterrupted services for patients.

Speaking to the media, Vaheed reassured residents that the current situation remains stable and under control. However, he cautioned against complacency, citing Tripura’s geographical proximity to Bangladesh, where measles outbreaks have recently been reported. This regional context has prompted the state to strengthen its surveillance systems and adopt preventive measures.

A special immunization drive is set to be launched within the coming week, targeting children aged 9 to 16 months who have not yet received the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine. Health authorities aim to achieve complete coverage in this critical age group to prevent any escalation of cases.

Officials also urged the public to remain vigilant but not alarmed. Parents have been advised to seek immediate medical attention if children exhibit symptoms such as fever accompanied by red rashes—common indicators of measles or rubella infection.

The coordinated efforts between district administration and health departments are expected to accelerate immunization campaigns and reinforce Tripura’s broader goal of eliminating measles and rubella. Authorities believe that such high-level interventions will significantly boost public confidence and ensure better compliance with vaccination initiatives.

With surveillance tightened and healthcare systems on alert, Unakoti district is positioning itself to effectively manage risks and safeguard child health against preventable diseases.
