Journalist Mithun Bhowmik brutally assaulted in Santirbazar, sustaining serious head injuries. Police register case against two accused as concerns grow over rising attacks on media professionals and lack of administrative action in recent months.

A violent incident late Saturday night has raised fresh concerns over the safety of journalists in southern Tripura, after a local media professional sustained severe head injuries in an alleged assault.

Mithun Bhowmik, editor of the Santirbazar-based digital news platform Planet Tripura, was reportedly attacked while returning home after closing his shop. According to initial reports, two individuals—identified as Gopal Chakraborty and Nitai Baidya, both residents of Santirbazar—intercepted him and launched a sudden assault.

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary details suggest that the attackers used motorcycle keys as weapons, striking Bhowmik multiple times, particularly targeting his head. The intensity of the attack left him seriously injured and bleeding at the scene.

Local residents quickly intervened and rushed him to Santirbazar District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Medical officials have described his injuries as serious, particularly due to trauma to the head, though further updates on his condition are awaited.

Following the incident, a formal complaint was lodged at Santirbazar Police Station. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. The officer-in-charge assured that the accused individuals would be apprehended soon and that appropriate legal action would follow.

The incident has sparked outrage among the local journalist community. Speaking from the hospital, Bhowmik expressed deep concern over what he described as a growing pattern of violence against media professionals in the region. He alleged that at least two journalists had been attacked in recent months without any significant administrative response or accountability.

The latest assault has intensified questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the protection mechanisms available for journalists working in smaller towns. Media organizations and civil society groups are expected to raise the issue with authorities, demanding swift justice and stronger safeguards.

As the investigation continues, the case has become a focal point in the broader discussion about press freedom and safety in the region.
