Assam Police seized 3,600 bottles of narcotic Eskuf syrup worth Rs 25 lakh at Churaibari checkpoint, arresting two accused. The interception highlights intensified action against drug trafficking networks targeting Tripura and Northeast India within 72 hours.
A major anti-narcotics operation has once again highlighted the vigilance of Assam Police, as officers at the Churaibari checkpoint intercepted a large consignment of illegal cough syrup concealed inside a transport vehicle heading toward Tripura. The seizure comes within 72 hours of a previous crackdown, reinforcing concerns over the growing use of interstate routes for drug trafficking.
The operation was carried out during routine naka checking on Saturday afternoon. A six-wheeler container truck, bearing registration number AS25FC-6316, was stopped around 1 p.m. while traveling from Guwahati to Agartala. Upon inspection, officers discovered two wooden crates hidden among regular courier parcels typically associated with online deliveries. The concealment method suggested a deliberate attempt to evade suspicion.
Inside the crates, police recovered a total of 3,600 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup, a substance frequently misused as a narcotic due to its codeine content. The consignment was carefully packed into twelve cartons, each containing 300 bottles. Authorities estimate the black-market value of the seized contraband to be approximately Rs 25 lakh, indicating the scale and profitability of such illegal operations.
Two individuals, identified as Mofizul Islam (30) from Hajo and Sunti Ali (40) from Nagaon, were arrested at the scene. According to preliminary interrogation, the accused had loaded the consignment in Guwahati and were tasked with delivering it to Lichubagan in Agartala. However, inconsistencies in their statements have raised suspicion about their possible involvement in a broader trafficking network.
Speaking on the development, Niranjan Das, officer-in-charge of the Churaibari police outpost, confirmed that a case has been registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The accused are scheduled to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court on Sunday. Further investigation is underway to trace the origin and intended distribution network of the seized consignment.

This latest seizure underscores the strategic importance of the Churaibari checkpoint as a key transit control point between Assam and Tripura. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly identified this route as a vulnerable corridor for smuggling activities targeting the northeastern region.
Officials noted that back-to-back interceptions within a short span demonstrate both the persistence of traffickers and the heightened alertness of enforcement agencies. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to intensifying surveillance and dismantling organized drug networks operating across state borders.
