PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron stress urgent restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting global energy security concerns, regional stability, and strengthened India-France strategic cooperation amid rising West Asia tensions.

In a diplomatic engagement amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Narendra Modi and Emmanuel Macron have jointly emphasized the urgent need to restore safety and freedom of navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

According to official statements, Prime Minister Modi received a phone call from President Macron on Thursday, during which both leaders exchanged views on the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia. The leaders underscored the importance of maintaining open and secure maritime routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

Following the conversation, Prime Minister Modi shared details on the social media platform X, stating that both nations are aligned in their commitment to ensuring peace, stability, and uninterrupted maritime movement in the region. He highlighted that India and France would continue close cooperation to address emerging challenges and promote regional security.

This latest conversation builds upon earlier discussions held on March 19, when both leaders had stressed the urgent need for de-escalation in West Asia and a return to dialogue and diplomacy. The continuity of high-level engagement reflects growing concerns among global powers regarding instability in the region and its implications for international trade and energy markets.

The diplomatic outreach also follows recent engagements between the two countries aimed at strengthening their strategic partnership. Last month, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Paris and held talks with President Macron, further reinforcing bilateral cooperation. Earlier this year, President Macron visited India, where both leaders inaugurated the India-France Year of Innovation 2026 and participated in the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

In parallel developments, Prime Minister Modi also held a separate conversation earlier this week with Donald Trump. During that discussion, both leaders reviewed progress in bilateral relations and reiterated their commitment to strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Importantly, they too highlighted the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.

The repeated emphasis on the Strait of Hormuz by major global leaders underscores its critical importance to global energy security. Any disruption in this narrow maritime corridor can have far-reaching consequences, including volatility in oil prices and disruptions in global supply chains.

Analysts view the coordinated messaging from India, France, and the United States as a strong diplomatic signal aimed at preventing further escalation in West Asia. By advocating for freedom of navigation and peaceful dialogue, these nations seek to stabilize a region that remains central to global economic and strategic interests.

As geopolitical uncertainties persist, India’s proactive diplomatic engagements reflect its growing role as a key stakeholder in global peace and maritime security, while also reinforcing its partnerships with leading world powers.
