Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Customs in Tripura, seized banned codeine-based cough syrup worth Rs 40 lakh near Agartala. The crackdown highlights intensified anti-narcotics efforts to curb illegal drug trafficking in Northeast India.
In a breakthrough against narcotics trafficking in Northeast India, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Customs Department, conducted a successful joint operation in Agartala, recovering a large quantity of banned cough syrup valued at approximately Rs 40 lakh.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, security personnel launched a targeted raid in the Taranagar area, located nearly 20 kilometers northeast of Agartala in Tripura, on Sunday. During the operation, authorities seized 140 cases of codeine-based cough syrup, a substance frequently misused and often linked to illegal drug networks operating across the region.
Officials confirmed that the recovered consignment was suspected to be intended for unlawful distribution, potentially feeding into organized narcotics trafficking channels. Codeine-based cough syrups are regulated due to their addictive properties and widespread misuse, especially in border states where smuggling routes remain active.
Following the seizure, the confiscated items were formally handed over to the Customs Department in Agartala for further legal proceedings and investigation. Authorities are now working to trace the origin and intended destination of the consignment, as well as identify individuals or networks involved in the operation.
The success of this operation underscores the growing effectiveness of coordinated enforcement actions between paramilitary forces and government agencies. The Assam Rifles emphasized that such joint efforts are part of a sustained campaign to dismantle drug trafficking networks and strengthen law enforcement across the Northeast.
In an official statement, the force reiterated its commitment to maintaining a drug-free environment in Tripura and surrounding regions. It also highlighted that intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency collaboration remain critical tools in combating the rising threat of narcotics smuggling.
