PM Modi and US President Donald Trump discuss West Asia tensions, stressing the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and secure while reinforcing India-US strategic partnership, energy security, and global trade stability amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

In a diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, focusing on the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia and reaffirming the importance of maintaining the Strait of Hormuz as “open and secure.”

The high-level discussion comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with global stakeholders closely monitoring the stability of critical maritime routes. Following the call, Modi shared details via social media, emphasizing the progress made in bilateral ties and reiterating India’s commitment to strengthening its Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership with the United States.

“We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors. We are committed to further strengthening our partnership in all areas,” Modi stated. He further underlined that both leaders discussed West Asia’s volatile situation and stressed the necessity of ensuring uninterrupted maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most crucial oil transit chokepoints, plays a pivotal role in global energy supply. Any disruption in this narrow passage can significantly impact international oil markets and trade flows. India, being a major energy importer, has consistently advocated for stability and freedom of navigation in the region.

New Delhi has also welcomed the recently announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that it would pave the way for lasting peace. Indian officials have repeatedly highlighted that prolonged conflict in West Asia not only exacerbates humanitarian suffering but also disrupts global supply chains and energy markets.

India’s position remains firmly rooted in promoting de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy. The government has stressed that unimpeded commerce and maritime movement through strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz are essential for maintaining global economic stability.

Meanwhile, the conversation between Modi and Trump also reflects the broader trajectory of India-US relations, which have deepened significantly in recent years. According to US Ambassador Sergio Gor, Washington views India as central to its long-term global strategy.

In a recent interview, Gor emphasized a results-driven diplomatic approach influenced by President Trump’s leadership style. He described Trump as a leader who prioritizes swift action and measurable outcomes, adding that strengthening ties with India remains a key objective.

The ambassador also highlighted the personal rapport between the two leaders, noting that Trump considers Modi a “true friend,” a dynamic that has contributed to enhanced cooperation across sectors.

Defence collaboration continues to be a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship. The ongoing Major Defence Partnership, along with a newly proposed 10-year framework, aims to expand cooperation in defence manufacturing, advanced technology, and operational coordination.
