Assam records nearly 60% voter turnout while Puducherry crosses 56% and Kerala approaches 50% by afternoon, indicating strong electoral participation in high-stakes Assembly elections. Counting scheduled for May 4 amid intense political competition.

A strong wave of voter participation marked the ongoing Assembly elections across Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry on Thursday, reflecting heightened political engagement and raising expectations of record-breaking turnout in key regions.

According to data released by the Election Commission of India, Assam recorded a voter turnout of 59.63 percent, while Puducherry registered 56.83 percent as of 1 p.m. Kerala also witnessed a significant surge, with 49.70 percent of its electorate casting votes by early afternoon.

Polling began at 7 a.m. across all three regions, covering 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam, 140 in Kerala, and 30 in Puducherry. The results of these crucial elections will be declared on May 4.

Kerala Witnesses Early Momentum, High Turnout Expected

Kerala emerged as a focal point of the electoral exercise, with nearly half of its 2.71 crore voters exercising their democratic rights by midday. The state’s robust polling infrastructure was activated well before sunrise, with operations beginning as early as 5:30 a.m. across more than 30,000 polling stations.

Election officials conducted mandatory mock polling procedures to ensure transparency and efficiency. Notably, around two lakh voters had already cast their votes through home voting provisions, reflecting inclusive electoral measures aimed at maximizing participation.

The steady turnout trend has fueled expectations that Kerala may challenge or even surpass its previous voter turnout records by the end of polling.

Assam Sees Intense Political Contest and Strong Participation

In Assam, long queues were visible outside polling stations from the early hours, indicating strong voter enthusiasm. The election is being held in a single phase and will continue until 5 p.m.

The political battle in the state is primarily between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress. The ruling BJP is seeking a third consecutive term in office, while the Congress is aiming to reclaim power after nearly a decade.

The outcome is expected to significantly influence the political landscape of the northeastern region. Assam’s 126-member Assembly is set to complete its current term on May 20, adding urgency to the electoral process.

Puducherry Registers Steady Voting Amid Coalition Stakes

In Puducherry, polling proceeded smoothly with a steady voter turnout reported throughout the morning and early afternoon. The Union Territory is currently governed by a coalition led by the All India N.R. Congress under Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, with support from the BJP.

With 30 Assembly seats at stake, the election is considered crucial for determining the stability and future direction of the coalition government. Authorities confirmed that extensive preparations were undertaken to ensure free, fair, and peaceful polling.

Final Push Before Poll Closure

Despite the official end of campaigning, candidates across all three regions made last-minute efforts to connect with undecided voters and local influencers. This final outreach highlighted the high stakes and intense competition characterizing these elections.
