Dharmanagar by-election on April 9 sees six candidates contesting in Tripura. Polling preparations, security arrangements, voter details, and election guidelines highlight a high-stakes political battle following the demise of MLA Biswabandhu Sen.
The stage is set for a crucial by-election in Tripura’s Dharmanagar Assembly constituency, with polling scheduled to take place on April 9 between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. Election officials have confirmed that the counting of votes will be conducted on May 4, drawing attention to what is expected to be a closely contested electoral battle.
The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, whose passing left the seat vacant. His death marked a significant moment in the state’s political landscape, prompting all major political parties to field candidates in a bid to secure the constituency.
A total of six candidates are contesting the Dharmanagar seat in North Tripura, making the election highly competitive. Political observers note that the outcome could have broader implications for party dynamics in the region, especially as Tripura continues to witness evolving political alignments.
Chief Electoral Officer Brijesh Pandey addressed the media on Monday, confirming that campaigning will officially conclude at 5:00 pm on April 7. This will be followed by the mandatory 48-hour silence period, during which all forms of public campaigning, including rallies, meetings, and processions, will be strictly prohibited in accordance with election regulations.
The Dharmanagar constituency has a total of 46,142 registered voters. Of these, 22,384 are male voters and 23,758 are female voters, reflecting a slightly higher female voter base. Additionally, there are 91 service electors. Election authorities have set up 55 polling stations across 42 locations, covering both urban and rural areas to ensure smooth voting operations.
In an effort to promote inclusivity and participation, special arrangements have been introduced. Eleven polling stations will be entirely managed by women personnel, while others will be operated by teams comprising youth and persons with disabilities. These initiatives aim to encourage broader community involvement and enhance confidence in the electoral process.
Authorities have also focused on improving voter convenience. All polling booths have been equipped with essential facilities such as drinking water, electricity, ramps for differently-abled voters, toilets, and designated waiting areas. Model polling stations have been established to provide an enhanced voting experience, showcasing best practices in election management.
To ensure transparency and maintain strict security, 75 micro observers have been deployed across polling locations. Surveillance measures include naka check-points, static surveillance teams, flying squads, and video monitoring units. These steps are intended to prevent any irregularities and ensure adherence to election guidelines.
A dry period has been announced from April 7 to April 9, during which the sale and distribution of alcohol will be prohibited. Additionally, strict restrictions will be enforced within a 100-metre radius of polling stations, where campaigning and unauthorized gatherings will not be allowed.
Logistical arrangements have also been finalized, with election materials and personnel being coordinated from designated centres. Notably, Dharmanagar Government Girls’ School will function as a key dispatch hub for election operations.
