Villagers in Tripura’s Ambassa threaten to boycott ADC elections, demanding roads, water, healthcare, market infrastructure, and community hall repair, highlighting years of neglect and mounting pressure on authorities ahead of crucial local polls.

Residents of Dhan Chhara Debbarma Para under Ambassa subdivision of Tripura have issued a stern warning to boycott the upcoming Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections if their long-standing civic demands are not addressed promptly by the administration.

On Monday, a large group of villagers assembled at the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Ambassa, staging a peaceful protest to highlight years of alleged neglect. The demonstration comes just days ahead of the crucial ADC polls, intensifying pressure on local authorities to act swiftly.

Holding placards and raising slogans, the agitators submitted a memorandum outlining a five-point charter of demands. They emphasized that despite repeated appeals over the years, there has been little to no progress in improving basic infrastructure and essential services in their locality.

The most pressing concern raised by the villagers is the lack of permanent road connectivity. Ironically, Dhan Chhara Debbarma Para is located adjacent to the SDM office, yet remains cut off from proper access roads. Residents stated that this absence of connectivity has made daily commuting extremely difficult, particularly during the monsoon season when muddy paths become nearly impassable. Emergency situations, including medical evacuations, are also severely hampered due to the poor road condition.

Another key demand is the installation of a deep tube well to ensure a consistent and safe drinking water supply. Villagers complained of recurring water shortages and reliance on unsafe sources, which pose serious health risks to the community.

Healthcare infrastructure also remains a major concern. Protesters have called for the establishment of a health sub-centre within the locality, pointing out that residents currently have to travel considerable distances to access even basic medical services. This lack of nearby healthcare facilities has been particularly challenging for elderly residents, children, and pregnant women.

In addition, the community has demanded the construction of market stalls to support local livelihoods. Many villagers depend on small-scale trading, but the absence of designated market infrastructure limits their economic opportunities. They also urged authorities to repair the existing community hall, which is reportedly in a dilapidated condition and unfit for public use.

The protest concluded with a clear warning: if concrete steps are not taken soon, the villagers may collectively abstain from participating in the upcoming ADC elections. “We have raised these issues for years, but nothing has changed. This time, we demand action, not assurances,” a protester asserted.

The administration has yet to issue an official response, but the development signals growing grassroots discontent that could impact voter turnout and electoral dynamics in the region.
