Bangladesh faces a severe fuel shortage as tanker strikes, supply disruptions, and crackdown on hoarding threaten market stability. Transport systems, supply chains, and economic activity face mounting risks amid escalating West Asia tensions impacting fuel imports.

Bangladesh is grappling with a deepening fuel crisis that threatens to destabilize markets, disrupt transportation, and strain the country’s already fragile supply chains. The situation has intensified due to a combination of labor unrest, enforcement crackdowns, and global geopolitical tensions affecting fuel availability.

The crisis escalated sharply after tanker workers in eight northern districts launched an indefinite strike, halting the transportation of fuel from one of the region’s key supply hubs. Districts including Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Kurigram, and Lalmonirhat have reported severe shortages, raising fears of a wider economic fallout.

The strike, called by the Rangpur Divisional Tanker Workers Union, was triggered by the arrest and sentencing of three individuals in Nilphamari over allegations of fuel theft. Union leaders have demanded the immediate release of the detained workers within 24 hours, along with the removal of a senior administrative official. They have warned that the strike will continue indefinitely unless their demands are met.

As a direct consequence, operations at the strategically important Parbatipur Railway Head Oil Depot have come to a standstill. The depot, which plays a crucial role in supplying diesel, petrol, and octane across northern Bangladesh, has reportedly ceased all fuel dispatches. This has severely impacted fuel availability across the affected districts, with long queues forming at filling stations and transport operators facing mounting difficulties.

The disruption has already begun to affect passenger and goods transportation, with bus and truck services scaling back operations due to fuel scarcity. Industry experts warn that prolonged disruption could trigger a ripple effect across agriculture, manufacturing, and retail sectors, further compounding inflationary pressures.

In parallel, authorities have intensified enforcement measures in other parts of the country. In Rajshahi, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has significantly increased surveillance at oil depots and fuel stations to curb hoarding and cross-border smuggling. Security personnel have been deployed across key depots such as Padma, Meghna, and Jamuna, while monitoring has been expanded to multiple filling stations and vulnerable border areas.

The government has also introduced a cash incentive of up to 100,000 Bangladeshi taka for individuals providing credible information on illegal fuel hoarding and smuggling activities. The initiative, led by the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the fuel distribution network.

Officials have acknowledged that opportunistic actors are exploiting the supply crunch by engaging in black-market activities. Authorities have pledged strict legal action against offenders, emphasizing the need to maintain equitable distribution during the crisis.

The Petrol Pump Owners Association has extended its support to the striking tanker workers, further complicating efforts to restore normalcy. However, negotiations between stakeholders are reportedly underway, offering a glimmer of hope for a resolution.

Beyond domestic challenges, the crisis is also being fueled by global geopolitical developments. The ongoing conflict in West Asia, particularly the escalation following joint military actions by the United States and Israel targeting Iranian positions, has disrupted global energy markets. Iran’s retaliatory strikes have further heightened tensions, impacting fuel supply chains and pushing up import costs for countries like Bangladesh.

Energy analysts warn that unless both domestic disputes and international supply pressures are addressed swiftly, Bangladesh could face prolonged instability in its fuel market. The situation underscores the country’s vulnerability to both internal disruptions and external shocks in an increasingly volatile global energy landscape.
