TUNF extremist arrested in North Tripura with explosives, digital evidence, and sabotage plans. Police intensify crackdown to dismantle militant network targeting security forces, highlighting growing security vigilance in the sensitive border region.
In a breakthrough for security forces, a member of the outlawed militant outfit Tripura United National Front (TUNF) was arrested in North Tripura on Thursday, raising fresh concerns over insurgent activities in the region.
The accused, identified as Vanlal Liana Reang (48), also known by aliases Ornojoy Reang and Pastor, was wanted in connection with a case registered at Vanghmun Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosive Substances Act, according to Tripura Police officials.
Suspicious Movement Leads to Arrest
Police sources revealed that the accused was initially detained by personnel of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) 13th Battalion during a routine patrol operation along the Damcherra–Kanchanpur road. His suspicious movement prompted a thorough search, which led to the recovery of incriminating materials linked to TUNF.
“Upon discovery of materials indicating his association with the banned outfit and confirmation of his involvement in an ongoing case, he was handed over to Vanghmun Police Station for further legal action,” a senior police official stated.
Explosives and Digital Evidence Recovered
Authorities confirmed that several incriminating items were seized from the accused, including organizational seals of TUNF and digital evidence that could provide crucial leads into the group’s operations. Earlier in the investigation, security forces had already recovered explosive materials such as electric detonators and Neogol-90, indicating a well-planned militant operation.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused was actively involved in planning sabotage activities, including potential blast attacks targeting police vehicles. The alleged objective was to ambush security personnel, eliminate them, and loot arms and ammunition to strengthen the militant outfit’s capabilities.
Security Concerns Rise in Border Areas
The arrest has once again highlighted the persistent threat of insurgent groups attempting to regroup and destabilize peace in Tripura, particularly in sensitive areas of North Tripura. Security forces have intensified surveillance and patrolling operations in border regions to prevent any such attempts.
Police officials emphasized that the operation underscores the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies and paramilitary forces in neutralizing potential threats before they materialize.
Investigation Underway to Dismantle Network
Tripura Police confirmed that further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend other members of the network. Efforts are being made to trace the supply chain of explosives and uncover the broader conspiracy behind the planned attacks.
