State-level workshop in Agartala to promote Integrated Farming Systems in Tripura, focusing on sustainable income, nutritional security, and climate resilience. ICAR and Krishi Vigyan Kendras unite farmers, scientists, and stakeholders for inclusive agricultural transformation.

In a decisive push towards sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture, the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre, is set to organise a One-Day State-Level Workshop on “Integrated Farming System for Sustainable Income, Nutritional Security and Climate Resilience in Tripura” on March 2, 2026. The event will be held at Pragna Bhawan from 11:00 AM onwards.

The workshop is being conducted in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, West Tripura and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Tripura, reflecting a coordinated effort to bridge the gap between research institutions, extension agencies, and the farming community. The initiative aims to popularise Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) as a viable solution for enhancing farmers’ income and ensuring long-term sustainability in Tripura’s agriculture sector.

Addressing Challenges of Small and Marginal Farmers

Tripura’s agricultural landscape is predominantly characterised by small and marginal landholdings. Farmers often face challenges such as fragmented plots, fluctuating market prices, climate variability, and limited access to diversified income opportunities. The Integrated Farming System approach seeks to address these issues by promoting the integration of crops, livestock, fisheries, poultry, horticulture, and other allied activities within a single farm unit.

Experts highlight that IFS enables optimal utilisation of farm resources, recycling of waste, reduction of input costs, and mitigation of production risks. By combining multiple enterprises, farmers can generate year-round income while enhancing soil health and biodiversity. This holistic model is particularly relevant for Tripura, where erratic rainfall patterns and soil degradation increasingly threaten agricultural productivity.

Focus on Sustainable Income and Nutritional Security

A key objective of the workshop is to strengthen sustainable income generation and household nutritional security. Diversified farming systems not only provide multiple streams of revenue but also ensure access to a balanced diet through the production of cereals, vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, and fish at the farm level.

Special technical sessions will focus on strategies to enhance farm profitability through scientific management practices and adoption of location-specific technologies. Scientists will present research-backed solutions tailored to Tripura’s agro-climatic conditions, ensuring that recommendations are practical and implementable.

Climate Resilience at the Core

Climate resilience will be a central theme of the workshop. With increasing instances of unpredictable rainfall, rising temperatures, and pest outbreaks, farmers in Tripura are vulnerable to climate-induced shocks. The IFS model offers built-in resilience by diversifying risk across multiple farm enterprises.

Technical deliberations will explore adaptive measures such as water conservation techniques, integrated nutrient management, crop-livestock synergy, and climate-smart agricultural practices. Officials from various line departments are expected to participate in discussions aimed at enhancing inter-departmental convergence for effective implementation of integrated farming interventions.

Farmer–Scientist Interaction and Inclusive Outreach

The programme will facilitate interactive sessions between farmers and scientists, providing a platform for progressive farmers to share field-level innovations and experiences. Such interactions are expected to encourage peer learning and accelerate the adoption of best practices across districts.

As part of its outreach component, agricultural inputs will be distributed to eligible beneficiaries under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP), Tribal Sub Plan (TSP), and ICAR–NEH component programmes. This targeted support aims to empower resource-poor farmers and encourage the adoption of integrated farming models among Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.

Special emphasis will also be placed on women farmers and marginal households, reinforcing the state’s commitment to inclusive agricultural growth. Representatives from financial institutions and allied departments are expected to guide farmers on credit linkages and support schemes.

Towards Resilient and Inclusive Agriculture

The upcoming workshop is viewed as a timely and strategic initiative to translate research into actionable field-level practices. By promoting Integrated Farming Systems, the organisers aim to build resilient agricultural systems capable of withstanding climate uncertainties while improving livelihoods.
