Rail connectivity in Mizoram witnesses historic transformation as Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train reaches Sairang. Bairabi-Sairang railway line boosts tourism, freight, employment, and regional integration, marking a powerful milestone in Northeast India’s infrastructure and economic growth story.

Rail connectivity in Mizoram has entered a transformative phase, marking a historic chapter in the state’s development journey. On February 12, 2026, the prestigious Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train arrived at Sairang Railway Station for the first time under the “North East Discovery” circuit. The arrival of this premium tourist train carrying 81 travelers from across India and countries such as the United States and Nepal reflects Mizoram’s rising prominence on both the national and international tourism landscape.

The milestone follows the inauguration of the 51.38-kilometer Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line by Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025. The railway line has proven to be a watershed moment for the northeastern state. Within just six months of its operational launch, Mizoram has experienced a steady increase in tourist inflow, underlining the direct impact of improved accessibility.

Enhanced rail connectivity has opened new economic opportunities across the state. The surge in visitors has strengthened hospitality services, boosted eco-tourism initiatives, and revived interest in cultural tourism. Hotels, tour operators, transport services, and local artisans have witnessed tangible growth in demand. Mizoram is now emerging as a vibrant destination within Northeast India, aligning with the broader national vision of inclusive growth and regional integration.

Passenger services operating along the Bairabi–Sairang route have received an overwhelming public response. Since the commencement of train operations in September 2025, occupancy rates have consistently surpassed expectations. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express has recorded occupancy levels exceeding 147 percent and 154 percent in both directions, indicating exceptional demand. Similarly, the Sairang-Guwahati Express and the Sairang-Kolkata Express have reported occupancy above 100 percent, highlighting strong public acceptance and connectivity needs.

Further strengthening regional mobility, the Indian Railways flagged off a new train service from Sairang to Silchar on February 9, 2026. This route connects Mizoram directly to Silchar, a major educational, medical, and commercial hub in Assam’s Barak Valley. The expansion significantly improves access to healthcare facilities, higher education institutions, and broader market networks, fostering inter-state collaboration and economic synergy.

Freight operations on the Bairabi-Sairang section have also gained remarkable momentum since commissioning. Shortly after inauguration, the first freight rake consisting of 21 cement wagons reached Sairang, marking the beginning of regular goods movement to the state. Since then, freight diversification has expanded to include cement, sand, stone chips, essential commodities, and automobiles.

A notable milestone was the arrival of the first inward automobile rake carrying 119 passenger vehicles. This demonstrated the railway line’s capability to handle high-value bulk consignments efficiently. The strengthening of freight logistics has reduced transportation costs, improved supply chain efficiency, and enhanced market competitiveness within Mizoram.

To further support agricultural and horticultural producers, the Northeast Frontier Railway has introduced refrigerated parcel van services. This initiative facilitates the transportation of perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers to distant markets while minimizing spoilage. Local farmers and traders now have improved access to national markets, creating income stability and reducing logistics constraints.

Rail connectivity has thus emerged as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation in Mizoram. Beyond tourism and freight growth, the railway network is fostering employment, boosting trade, and enhancing mobility. Infrastructure development is no longer confined to physical tracks but extends to economic empowerment and social integration.

As expansion efforts continue, Northeast Frontier Railway remains committed to upgrading infrastructure, improving service quality, and expanding passenger and freight operations. The transformation underway signals a long-term growth trajectory for Mizoram, positioning the state as a dynamic gateway to Northeast India and reinforcing rail connectivity as a powerful driver of inclusive and sustainable development.
