Ex-SPO jawan Nabajit Sarkar arrested in Agartala’s Nandan Nagar for alleged extortion, criminal intimidation, and assault. Police registered FIR after complaints of Rs 2 lakh protection money demand and threats to local residents and landowners.

an ex-Special Police Officer (SPO) jawan was arrested from the Nandan Nagar area of Agartala on Friday following serious allegations of extortion, criminal intimidation, and assault. The accused, identified as Nabajit Sarkar, was taken into police custody after multiple complaints were lodged by local residents regarding his alleged unlawful activities.

According to police sources, a First Information Report (FIR) was formally registered against Sarkar on Thursday after he allegedly trespassed into a private property and disrupted ongoing construction work. The complainant, a local resident constructing a house in Nandan Nagar, accused Sarkar of demanding Rs 2 lakh as “protection money” in exchange for allowing the construction to continue without interference.

“We had begun constructing our house, and excavation work was underway when Nabajit Sarkar allegedly entered our premises and demanded Rs 2 lakh. He threatened to kill our family members if we refused to pay,” the complainant stated in his police report.

The situation reportedly escalated later that night when the accused allegedly switched off machinery being used for trench digging. When the complainant’s father attempted to intervene, Sarkar is accused of assaulting him before fleeing the scene after sensing that police had been alerted.

Following the incident, the family consulted local residents and leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party before approaching the police to file a formal complaint. Authorities acted promptly after verifying the allegations and took the accused into custody from his residence in the locality.

Police officials revealed that Sarkar had previously served as a Special Police Officer but had left the service several months ago. The complainant further alleged that Sarkar had been involved in intimidating several land purchasers in the area and forcing them to pay money under threats.
